UCSD Waitlist Fall 2019 Transfer

Hi Guys!
So, I thought that I had UCSD in the bag, but apparently not. :frowning:
Major: Political Science
Alt Major: History
CCC: San Diego Mesa College
GPA: Unknown ( only because I attended college in Oregon when I was younger. I don’t know if those classes will be transferable).
Major GPA: 3.75
Essays: 9/10 ( at least I thought)(Wrote about how my anxiety in my earlier college years and how I have overcome it.)
EC: none, I worked full time. (which is what I think really hurt me)
Last year 379 students were admitted for Political Science and only 90 enrolled, so I am hoping that I can get in.
Good Luck everyone! I hope that we can all get off of the waitlist.

Does anyone know how many transfers were accepted this year?

If they accepted over capacity then they probably won’t accept many from the waitlist. If they accepted exactly capacity, then we all have a good chance.

@kaykapowski I applied for political science (international relations) from San Diego Mesa College as well  I think we have a good chance of getting off the waitlist!

@kristinpete This is speculative, but I think they typically accept more applicants then they have seats for (depending on major). It’s how many that SIR and ultimately enroll is what matters. If your major has a low yield rate, then it would appear that you have a good chance of getting in. The lower the yield, the less admitted students enroll, and therefore the greater chance you have of getting pulled off the waitlist into one of those unfilled seats. Now that regular decisions have passed, I think our hopes and dreams are basically riding on how many unfilled seats need to be filled, regardless of GPA/essays/ basketweaving abilities. I assume that because they’ve made the decision already to put us on the waitlist, they’re not going to take the extra time to figure out who is the best pick on the waitlist. I think UCSD’s goal is now to get as many paying bodies in the seats that they have, so that they can make $$$

However, I did read on one of these threads that UCSD had an unexpected amount of students enroll in 2017 and they had to pay extra money to those enrolled students for accommodations. This is because they sent out MORE admissions then they had seats for. Consequently in 2018 I read that they admitted the exact number of applicants they had seats for and that the waitlisters had a record high chance of getting in because of this. HOPEFULLY it goes the same way this year, and that the yields will be relatively the same as they have been in past years ;0

@jhrmar39 last year transfers were beginning to get admitted around May 10th according to their thread:

@tacoturnup I asked because in last year’s thread, someone revealed that they had accepted capacity as opposed to accepting over capacity as they usually would. Because they had accepted capacity last year, and not everyone accepted their offer, there was a lot of room for waitlisted applicants.

So if they did the same as last year and accepted none beyond capacity then we have a great chance. If they accepted more than capacity, then most of us likely will not get in.

Waitlisted freshmen started to hear back earlier than ever this year – it’s probably safe to say that UCSD is enrolling at capacity again. I saw a couple transfers turn down UCSD for UCLA or Cal in their respective threads, so I think we all have a great shot at getting in this year.

On that note, I was wondering what makes UCSD a top choice for everyone here. Personally I don’t really care that much about prestige but as far as CS goes, UCSD has a great program with tons of big tech companies recruiting students every year. Plus, I’m already a great fit for UC Socially Dead haha

@CSTransfer2019 Similar reasons. UCSD gets more students into Medical School than the others (with the exception of UCLA and UCB). There are far more opportunities for research and clinical experience. They are big right now in biomedical research, receiving $1.2 billion in research funding per year… It is academically focused and challenging, which motivates me. I am not a partier (which is what turned me off from UCSB). I wouldn’t be surrounded by students that don’t care about their future. UCSD doesn’t feel like some ordinary campus while some colleges tend to just feel like a large HS. I want to feel like I’m somewhere important. San Diego is beautiful - close to the beach, safe area, less traffic, perfect weather.

People say it’s harder to get a high GPA, but I’ve always done really well in my major related courses. I really want to go there to just focus on my major and the extracurriculars in research and medicine…

But if I don’t get in, I take all of this back. lol.

Also, how much sooner are freshman hearing back this year than last?

@kristinpete I’m pretty much in the same position; never cared for parties or loud campuses in general which is why I think UCSD is for me socially-wise. Hopefully we’ll hear back with good news soon.

Freshmen heard back at the same time transfer decisions were released, which means that they got decisions about 2 months earlier than last year. Hopefully they weren’t filling available transfer spots with waitlisted freshman…

I want to call and report that I wound up taking a different CS class as a prerequisite than I initially reported. I’m not sure if that will be a problem since both classes were listed as acceptable. Does anyone know what number I would call to report that change? I couldn’t find a number for admissions when I googled it.

Hello All,

CS Waitlisted here ! Being apart of UCSD’s CS Dept. is my dream !, I will definitely be applying next year if it doesn’t work out this year ! Cant wait to hear some more news ! Im also with you on being attracted to a less of a party type school as I have been sober for 4 years on May 7th !

@LEVITATE Omg that’s awesome I’m sober too, that’s why I’m very hesitant about UCSB. I’ll have a year tomorrow! What are your back up options in case we don’t get off this waitlist?

CCC Transfer
International Student
GPA: 3.35
Major: Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences
Accepted: UCD, UCSB, CSULB
Waitlisted: UCI, UCSD
Pre-reqs: all finished except physics
EC: Student government and honors student

Any other international students here? Also I know Scripps is quite selective but it’s not an impact major so what are my chances of getting off the waitlist? :frowning:

@queen_ofthenorth

Did you call them yet? If you haven’t already, I would suggest that you WAIT until you know the waitlist decision. Don’t give them more reason to deny you right now…Once they finalize the SIR’s and start pulling from the waitlist, I imagine (and this is totally my opinion, nothing to back it) that they’ll be more lenient with bad grades, dropped classes etc. because by the time they’re going to the waitlist, they’re going to be merely filling seats up. They’ve already reviewed your application just like the others.

Like Imagine this scenario: You’re a Global Health major on the waitlist with a 3.1, you get off the waitlist during your spring quarter (yay) but then your spring grades come out early June and you have 2 F’s (not yay). BUT there are still two unfilled spots for that global health major, and if UCSD doesn’t fill the spots, then they are missing out on big time money. I mean this is probably the worst possible scenario with the best possible outcome, but still.

EDIT: DO notify if/when you are taken off the waitlist IMMEDIATELY. I don’t see you having any problem though since they are both acceptable pre-reqs. Just let them know so they don’t suspect any shadiness on your part once you send in your final transcripts and there’s a class they don’t know about.

@queen_ofthenorth since they both are requisites I can’t see why it would be an issue. But you definitely should email them.

I called the admissions office and spoke to someone (I’m pretty sure he was a student). He told me that my situation shouldn’t be an issue at all as long as the class I’m in satisfies the same req, and it does. There isn’t a place to report that change or submit my winter quarter grades. I wanted to submit my winter quarter grades since I got a 4.0 which bounced up my gpa, but they said they’ll ask if they need them. I’m worried I won’t get off the waitlist because of my gpa. It was a pretty casual conversation; they didn’t ask for my name or anything. I also asked if waitlisted people get guaranteed housing and he wasn’t sure. However he did say that in his personal experience, he knows people that have found off-campus housing as late as the end of July. I thought that might be good to know.

@lunaxoxo No, you’re right - I don’t recall seeing too many chemistry majors, and I haven’t seen many Bio majors either…Human Biology in particular.
