Hi everyone,
I am an incoming freshman at UCSD, and I was wondering about Wilderness Orientation. I was thinking about going to WO and backpacking through the Sierra Nevada Mts.- mainly because it is the only session I can go to. I remember when I took a tour of UCSD my guide said that WO was one of the best things a freshman can do. I have never been camping or backpacking , but I love the outdoors, and I am athletic. However, my sister went camping recently and hated it and keeps telling me not to go. So I was wondering if there was anyone out there that had been to WO and if they liked it. Part of me wants to go for the adventure, but the other part is afraid of doing something outside of my comfort zone. And I want to make sure if I go I will have a good time if I'm spending $575 and staying for 10 days.

I did canoeing at WO right before freshman year. I’m not really an outdoors person, but even I thought it was pretty fun. However, you should know that if you’re camping, you’re not going to shower/change clothes for pretty much the entirety of the trip (4-7 days). If you can handle that, then go for it, but some people find that rather unappealing.

I don’t want to waist $575 and I also don’t want to be stuck in the mountains for over a week having a terrible time. If anyone had some anecdotes about there experiences I would love to hear them. I want to make my decision soon.

Of course I have to take the price into consideration, but I am more conserned about having fun. This trip is kind of big- 10 days in the mountain with people I don’t know. I want to make sure I will have a good- not feeling uncomfortable for 10 waiting for the trip to end.

I was definately thinking about it! I even set up a nice WO display on the kitchen counter as a sort of hint hint to my parents hahaha. But then I just decided against later on mainly due to money issues; my parents have already spent so much on my laptop and other supplies that I feel bad asking for more. :(

I was going to do the baja surf but It cost so much. It looks fun, but the backpacking looks more peaceful then crazy funny fun fun. I think if your a nature freak, definitely go. Its beautiful in the sierra mountains.
