UCSD's 6 colleges

In the uc application, it asks me to rank the 6 colleges with 1 being my favorite and 6 being my least favorite. As a prospective pre-med student hoping to major in chemistry, how should I rank these?

Earl Warren
Revelle
Eleanor Roosevelt
Thurgood Marshall
John Muir
Sixth College

Look at the GE requirements on this link.

It depends on how much of a broad education you want. The easy way out would probably be

1)Muir
2)Marshall
3)6th
4)Warren
5) Revelle
6) ERC

If you want a broad education, and one that is excellent for science and engineering majors

1) Revelle
2) Warren
3) ERC
4) Marshall
5) 6th
6) Muir

Hope this helps even though the lists are completely different.
I’m in Revelle and I love it except for the 3 humanities classes I have to take as a transfer student.

You have to take 5 humanities classes if you are an incoming freshman and they are not easy. They are basically the “English” classes you have to take

and if you are interested in history, ERC is a great place for you. We have this MMW course (it sounds scary, but trust me it is pretty easy if you know how to work things out).
It’s a 5 course sequence from the beginning of humans (the whole evolution thing which is briefly covered in one lecture) to the present day.

SECTION IS MANDATORY (though you can skip section once without it destroying your grade)

MMW 11: No writing, make sure you take good notes, pay attention in lecture, and go to section. It’s just an intro.

MMW 12: This covers the classical period. Here you begin what many students think of as “torture”… yep you will now be writing until your last MMW class. MMW 12 has three essays (unless they change it), they all relate to the what’s covered in lecture and you can only use sources from assigned readings and lecture. In my opinion this is the worst writing (just because of three essays…don’t remember the length but i assume its 4-6 pages)

MMW 13: This covers MMW Medieval times and you get to write only one essay, but it’s a research paper that’s about 8 pages long (or is it 10?). But don’t let that scare you. They baby you through everything so in the end, you have a pretty solid essay (a large portion does depend on how good you can write). The only bad thing, besides the length, is you have to go to the library and do research yourself, ie. the material isn’t given to you. It’s a bit time consuming.

MMW 14: The research paper continues and you get to write another one strictly on this time period: 1750CE to 1900 CE. (I’m in this course right now). I think the hardest part is finding a topic you like, but you get pretty used to everything by now, so it’s a breeze.

MMW 15: You cover all the great wars (WW I, WW II, cold war, etc.). i took this over the summer (no, i didn’t go on the abroad trip to Istanbul or whatever. But if you want to go, be sure to pay attention to when signups start because the spots go by really quickly; i think they will be going to london this summer) and i personally would prefer any MMW course over the summer. It’s shorter, sweeter, and there isn’t any time for each step (that really drives me crazy. I just prefer doing things on my own, instead of taking steps… so frustrating).

But it all depends on the TA you get. Nice TAs grade better, mean TAs don’t (personally i don’t really think MMW has any “mean” TAs. They just have different expectation levels, which in the end, puts you in a better spot). Ok, yeah MMW does sound like a lot of work, but it really sounds much harder than the true experience (at least for me, and I’m a bit of a slacker)

[The Six Colleges of UCSD – A Ranking Guide for Applicants | The Rebertian Times](<a href=“Blog — chrisrebert.com”>Blog — chrisrebert.com)

don’t base the college on just the GEs. That is important, but you’re gonna be living there so be sure to look at ALL angles :D

Good Luck,

for premed students, Muir and Marshall are definitely the best colleges. They have a pretty low amount of GE’s, so you can focus your time on your prereqs and get good grades on them.

Muir is the center of most of your classes (including science classes in Revelle), so I definitely recommend putting Muir as first.

I’m in Marshall, and the lack of difficult GE’s make it easy to plan my 4 years around doing well on premed reqs.

Thanks to all of your advice, I have decided to rank the colleges in this order:

Muir
Marshall
Warren
Revelle
6th
ERC

what!! ERC last :frowning:
hope i didn’t scare you will all that MMW stuff :D

I don’t know much about pre-med stuff but I can give you my general opinion of the six colleges.

ERC - I heard the writing classes are the hardest. The dining hall, Cafe Ventanas, is really nice in my opinion. The res halls and apartments all look really new and the whole college looks nice. You’re also close to RIMAC!

Marshall - I live in Marshall and the res halls are okay I guess but I’ve seen nicer. All the res halls are lined up in a row and it feel less social imo. The GEs are pretty easy though. Everyone says that the dining hall, OVT, used to be the best, but imo it sucks! Marshall is also located really close to the center of campus which is nice. In fact, the Lowers are located just a few hundred feet from Geisel.

Muir - This would be the college I would choose to be in if given the chance. Pines is the best dining hall and the GEs are the easiest. There’s also a close community-like feel because all of the res halls and apartments are structured better. Most res halls have common rooms for suites AND floors whereas in Marshall sometimes each suite is an entire floor.

Revelle - Everyone I’ve talked to agreed that Revelle has the hardest GEs. I’ve never been to Plaza but apparently the food sucks there. Revelle is also really large and in the southwest corner of campus so you might have to do a lot of walking. The res halls I’ve seen are pretty old, but the apartments are the newest buildings on campus.

Warren - Warren has really nice res halls. Their writing class is pretty intensive I hear, but you get it out of the way in just 2 quarters. Since I have a lot of friends in Warren, I’ve been there a lot and realized that it is the most secluded because it’s far from EVERYTHING. Even Sixth is closer to the center of campus. Warren just feels closer since it’s not covered by trees like Sixth is. The view from the res halls are nice though since you get to see the canyon. Canyon Vista is okay I guess. The food isn’t great but it’s not bad.

Sixth - I don’t really go to Sixth often but the apartments look like a suburban neighborhood. The res halls are sandwiched between a parking lot and soccer fields. Foodworx isn’t really a dining hall but the personal pizzas are nice.

Given the chance to re-do my application I personally would have chosen
1-Muir
2-Marshall
3-Warren
4-ERC
5-Revelle
6-Sixth

Best of luck!
