Looks like the acceptance rate dropped from 42.5 percent last year, to about 38 percent this year. I suspected it was going to drop, and that was making me very nervous!
My son was accepted for Fall Term.
1320 SAT, 30 ACT
GPA 3.9 UW, 4.3 weighted.
Good ECs, great essay (IMO).
Congrats to all who got in.
To those who didn’t, you will have great choices elsewhere!
Best of luck to all making their final college decisions in the next couple of months.
This puts UFs acceptance rate on par with University of Miami’s…unless theirs ALSO drops, lol. FSUs rate is going to drop too once their stats are published.
@Trisherella yay I’m so happy for you and your son! Your posts, whether it may seen like it not, actually helped me a lot during this past week. Maybe we’ll your son and I will see each other on campus next year!
@Trisherella Consider that UF OOS and In-state acceptance rates are about the same, UF has a lower in-state acceptance rate than the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (both were over 40% in 2016).

@mom3boyz - we never looked at UM even though we lived in south Florida for 15-16 yrs. What would your DC major in?
My problem with UM was 1) the cost - even with scholarships it can be pricey; and 2) the drive in and out of Miami. Coral Gables is very nice but it’s a pain to get in and out of there. I’ve also heard that UM can be a snobby, rich kid partying type of place but I do not know how true that is.
A business acquaintance of my H was a 'Golden ‘Caine’ (?) and huge UM supporter so apparently there are people who love it!
UF is a large, land-grant state university with high academic standards and a little bit of something for everyone. While the area around the university is densely populated, it doesn’t take a long drive to be in ‘country’ area of old Florida. Some complain that it is hard to get the earlier classes depending on your major, but that’s common at many big U’s. We moved up here from SoFlo and it is very different from what we are used to, but it has definitely grown on me and we love it now. School spirit is big at UF too. Football season is a blast, and we are having fun with basketball season now.
It is very hot in the summer, and can get cold during the winter, but it is manageable.
@SouthFloridaMom9 my s hopes to be pre-med… we are OOS also a concern if you feel like the outsider… another concern is the “just a numbers feel” although he is coming from a fairly large HS grad class 550… all insight appreciated
@mom3boyz I applied to both but don’t think I’ll be able to afford um. I really liked the size of UM and the fact that they still had a lot of school shootout end big athletics. The people there are super nice and in my opinion they didn’t seem snobby at all… However, once you leave campus, the social life can be very expensive.
@mom3boyz . . . OK, I would be a little concerned with pre-med at UF. We have a good friend whose son graduated from UF undergrad and med school. It is tough. Early science classes at UF are not easy and there are many smart students. As I understand it, you want to maximize your GPA for med school apps. That being said, UM won’t be a cake walk either.
UF consists of mostly in-state students, that is true, but President Fuchs is trying to change that to a certain extent. We do have many international students (at least it seems that way to me).
One other advantage I can think of for UM would be the airport . . . very easy to fly into Fort Lauderdale or Miami (but Miami airport is a little scary imho).
Just my added thoughts, though I’m still in favor of the Gator nation!
PS: My perspective is as someone who lived in south Florida a long time and burned out on it a little bit.
@kit4kat I understand you’re frustrated but those “underachievers” most likely did something amazing outside of class. Sure it doesnt always make sense why an extremely smart kid will get rejected, but this year was super competitive.
