Comments: Wasn’t sure about my course strength, but I guess my other stats made up for it

I have had a job for 3 years… many, many EC’s… Athlete… I was never home… I have friends who got In that were partying all the time and were part of one club… I scored in the top 2 percent in the country on my ACT of 32 and had high GPA…with many AP’s currently taking Calculus honors . Every school I applied to I was accepted with partial scholarships…

Admission rate was just under 38%. http://www.alligator.org/news/campus/article_e584a33e-f067-11e6-a022-276a54ba0335.html

@hopefulundertone Nothing is binding until you pay the money. Also, as someone who had UF as their first choice in state last year but wanted to go to their number one last year (sadly money was a problem which is not surprising for OOS), I LOVE IT HERE AT UF!!! As a UF and Honors Student, I want to congratulate all of you who got accepted! I 110% am now understanding what current alumni and people have told me when they said UF has so many opportunities! I am a Freshman rn, but I’m already into research, volunteering, and have a leadership position in a committee I’m in! I hope all of you coming here take full advantage of everything there is here. To those who didn’t get accepted and had this school as their first choice, don’t let this decision get you down (and this is coming from someone who applied from something she really wanted and was also not accepted). I’m a strong proponent of the philosophy that when one door closes, another one opens.

Congratulations, Class of 2021!

@BlackHuntress. Do you have any knowledge of the neuroscience dept.? Its reputation?

I’ve heard the UF is great in terms of offering research for those interested in neuroscience as an undergraduate student. However, there is no declaration of a “neuroscience” major…more like take the courses that fit to satisfy the neuroscience concentration (and this is coming from someone who originally was interested in doing neuroscience). Here is a link for more insight though in that regards:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-florida/1078423-uf-vs-vanderbilt-neuroscience.html

Hope this helps! @snicks1234

@BlackHuntress. disappointing. They don’t have a neuroscience dept.,as such, and no neuroscience major.

Bummer!

@FloridaStudent1

It means you are going to start in summer . My son last year was accepted in summer term and believe me… this is the best option.

@snicks1234 there is a neuroscience heavy concentration in the psych major and there is an interdisciplinary neuro major that requires an application and a thesis.

Accepted!

@SouthFloridaMom9 and @Gator88NE Can either or both you comment on getting to and from UF for OOS people? Specifically from the northeast would be even more helpful to me. Which airport, how far, shuttles, etc.

Would be happy to hear comments from anyone in the NYC area, actually.

Thanks.

@STEM2017 Not that knowledgeable on this. But…

Looks like we have several <$300 round trip flights into Gainesville (usually with a stop over in Atlanta), from the NYC airports. That’s likely the best way (I was expecting it to be much more expensive…).

Most freshman don’t take cars to UF. Parking is limited, and if they move their car, it’s a nightmare to find a new spot. Lots of good public transportation (Buses) which is free for UF students (nothing is “free”, the cost is covered by one of the fee’s we get charged…)

Gainesville airport is small, and not super reliable. My child is a student at UF, and we fly into Orlando from BWI most times. She has to take a Megabus and an Uber from there, but it’s really the most efficient and inexpensive travel plan. There is a FB group for gator famiies in the NY/NJ area.

Yeah, my H flies from GNV frequently and it is not reliable (small market which depends on the hubs).

I personally love the JAX airport, but the Orlando suggestion above is what many OOS students do if our family page is an indicator.

It’s my only big negative with Gainesville (other than it is hot as heck in the summer).

@STEM2017

@PAMom21 what is the fb page called
Does the bus take them right from MCO airport to UF? Does Jacksonville have one as well? Uber must be pricey??

The bus usually goes to Rosa Park bus station in downtown Gainesville, which is a little…um, what’s the right word. Hubby called it “sketchy”. But so far, no problems. She usually gets a ride from there, though there are local buses. It’s not ideal, but she’s at her dream school. The Uber jumps are pretty short. My son is at UCF, and travel is definitely easier there! We did fly into Jacksonville once, which was easy enough with a rental car. We’ve never flown her by herself to that airport, always Orlando (half a dozen times now maybe).

Rejected students; Is any of you appealing?

Freshman admissions decisions will be available after 6pm EST on Friday, February 10.
