@Kysanx I have been waiting for the Machen Family Opportunity for 3 weeks now, the anticipation is killing me!
After a long, long week of straight waitlists and rejections, it feels great to say that I was accepted to UF Honors! Providing that Yale or Duke doesn’t accept me from their waitlist, it looks like I’m going to UF for the next 4 years I’m so glad that UF liked my essays - I worked really hard on them and it’s nice to finally get accepted somewhere that I actually want to attend.
Congrats! Also UF has to be a LOT cheaper than Yale or Duke!
Could save some of that money for graduate school.
@Trisherella Yeah, that’s true! Unfortunately, UF didn’t give me any financial aid, but I could still attend UF for 3 years for the price of 1 year at Yale. UF is clearly the better option in the long-run
@lhw1998 I definitely feel you on the waitlist/rejection front. Waitlisted from Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Vanderbilt and rejected from Penn, but Honors and presidential scholarship at UF
@hopefulundertone yeah, this year’s admissions cycle was a complete bloodbath. I was lucky enough to get a few waitlists here and there, but some of my friends (who were completely qualified) were rejected absolutely everywhere. It was really, really bad…
I was accepted u of fl. , u. of Miami and Georgetown. I got nothing from the state of Fl. and nothing but loans from the U of Fl. Miami was more generous, but still not enough. Accepted to georgetown and full ride on tuition . So hopefully I can help someone on waitlist here.
I want the U of florida to know I am grateful for their acceptance.
@snicks1234 Congrats! and maybe, in a few years, you may end up at UF for Grad school
I’ve spent the last hour or so looking at the AP/IB exam credit charts on UF’s website. I have 63 credits from all of my exams, 40 of which count toward the general education requirements (not including 11 credits of Spanish in the 40). However, UF only accepts 45 credits. How do I/UF decide which 45?
@hopefulundertone I’m sure you’ll get to pick, working with your advisor. Your (in major) advisor will layout what courses you’ll need to compete for your major (minors, dual degrees, whatever).
Is it an advantage coming in with that many credits? I could see it if you want to graduate early, but what if you don’t?
Yes, @Trisherella , it’s a great advantage! Having so many credits under their belts allows students to lighten their course loads when they are taking the high pressure, heavy work load classes some majors require. Incoming credits from AP and or IB are a wonderful thing! Plus money saving
But don’t you HAVE to take 15 credits per semester, or 30 credits per year, in order to keep your Bright Futures scholarship? (I’m assuming you could take 12 & 18 if you wanted to)
Nope, full time minimum is 12 for Bright Futures. And 12 or 13 or 14 hours can be a full load for some majors some semesters. Or for students with jobs outside of school.
Here is the link to the UF AP exam credit info https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/advising/info/AP-examination-credit-info.aspx
Students can bring in 45 credit hours from AP/IB/AICE https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/advising/info/award-of-incoming-credits.aspx
Hallelujah!!
Thanks for the helpful links, Floridamom!
I took my D to Florida Days yesterday and that question came up in the CLAS breakout session. Instead of answering it directly, the presenter said there will be a pre-Preview packet sent out which will have a work sheet to help you map your AP credits to UF classes and help YOU decide which APs to use. Otherwise it will be worked out at Preview.
I sure hope I heard him correctly.
@Trisherella Depending on how this May’s AP testing goes my D may bring 45 AP credits. The advantage for her is she should be able to double major and still finish in 4 years. She will not have to jump heavily into 3000 level classes her first year (just one or two a semester) so she will take some 1000 and 2000 classes that look interesting. She is also planning on only 12 -13 hours in Fall so she can join Marching Band,
AP credits are truly your friend, I heard 24 AP/IB/AICE is the average for incoming freshmen this year.
Please, please, please advise your students to take fewer credits their first semester. I promise that the Preview advisors will try to push 15 - 18 credits but freshman would be wise to stick to 12 credits, 15 tops. Especially those with a lot of AP credits. A certain number of credits coming in also will get you better parking on campus. Win!
