UF Engineering Student's That Transferred, I Could Use Some Advice

Right now I have a 2.75 GPA (no pre-req classes taken yet) and I’m expected to add at least another C to my transcript after I finish my summer classes in a couple of weeks. In addition to working 30-40 hour weeks over the course of my freshman year, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Her first surgery unexpectedly fell on my final exam for one of my courses during the fall in which I had to finish as fast as possible and then rush to the hospital. Then my midterms for this semester happened 10 days after she unfortunately passed away. Since I take these courses online, I have to take some exams at my local CC campus in a computer center monitored by proctors. There was no delaying my exams as these centers were only avaliable for testing during specific times over the course of 3 days.

With that said, the “Typical GPAs for accepted transfer students are in excess of 3.5 overall.” written at the bottom of the transfer page for mechanical engineers nails in the coffin that I might not be accepted when I plan to transfer in the future. I was curious if there was anybody here that transferred into this field with a GPA lower than a 3.5. I understand that I have time to make up some ground, especially since I have a fresh start with my core classes, but as I enter into the most difficult part of my AA degree, I am not confident that I can manage A’s, especially with my situation at work.

At this point, I am wondering if it is worth it to give up on UF now. USF is only 30 minutes away from where I currently live and they only require that I take 3 of the 8 core classes that UF requires for transfer students. I can finish by next spring as opposed to finishing in the fall if I decide to take the 8 core classes mandated by UF.
