So I’m planning to rush in the fall and I’m looking for some information to help me decide what to choose.
My understanding is that SAE and ATO are traditionally the top fraternities. These would be 2 fraternities I would be interested in rushing. Does anyone know about these 2 or any other good/cool fraternities? Is it hard to get into? My dad was in SAE at UF back in the mid-80s if that helps at all. Thanks.
I think you do yourself a disservice if you go into rush with preconceived notions such as these – unless you are already a UF student and have developed these opinions yourself.
By their nature, fraternities completely turn-over their membership at least every 4 years – probably sooner. (Or 7 years if you are an Animal House fan.) Your best bet is to visit as many houses as you can and see which one feels right for you. It was a million years ago, but I rushed my sophomore year and waiting was the best decision I ever made. I already knew a few things about the different houses and I had matured one more year.
Also, some fraternities now have year-round rush, so you can actually begin to pledge in the middle of the fall or the spring. There’s less pressure to be in a “Fall pledge class.”
If you are a legacy at SAE, then you should definitely go and check it out, and they might give you a few bonus points for being a legacy. In the end, you should want to get in on your own merit.
Is it hard to get into a fraternity? If you find a house that you like, it shouldn’t be. Why would you want to join a fraternity that isn’t sure it wants you? Plus, like in Animal House, they need the dues.
