UF hires senior VP for health affairs

This is a great pick for the UFCOM! Dr. Guzick is Dean of a COM that is highly ranked in research and primary care. I see lots of good things in the near future for UFCOM. He will be responsible for filling the currently vacant Dean of UFCOM position. I am VERY sure that his connections and highly reputable career will attract some of the best to apply for the position.

UF has named a new senior vice president for health affairs and president for the UF&Shands Health System.

Beginning July 1, Dr. David Guzick, the dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester in New York, will replace Dr. Douglas Barrett to run the world-renowned hospital’s health care system and UF’s Health Science Center.

Guzick said his first priority will be patient care, but “everything else follows,” referring to the Health Science Colleges and Shands impact on patient care.

“It’s very exciting,” Guzick, 57, said. “My job is to try to individualize areas of concern and stimulate people to come together who wouldn’t have before.”

University of Rochester is a heavy weight Research University. This is a steal in my honest opinion.

The Center comprises the University of Florida’s Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health & Health Professions and Veterinary Medicine. The Health Science Center is the only academic health center in the United States with six health-related colleges located on a single, contiguous campus. The facility was named after the 4th President of the University of Florida J. Hillis Miller, Sr…

In addition, the Health Science Center is a world leader in interdisciplinary research, and generates over half of all UF’s total research awards. The HSC is also affiliated with Shands at the University of Florida and Shands Jacksonville. In all 6,159 total students are enrolled in all six of the colleges.

Currently being constructed is a new University of Florida Cancer Hospital for Shands at the University of Florida which can be found on Archer road in Gainesville, Florida. The facility is estimated to cost $388 million, and is expected to be 500,000 square feet.
