How strong is the Physics department at UF? Would you consider them to be top tier? Do they do a lot of research?

I'm toying with either comp sci or physics, and wanted to know how strong physics was at UF. I have an interest in engineering, but feel that physics aligns more with my personal interests

pretty solid department. i dont know about its rankings, but they do promote themselves a lot.

what do you want to do? if you went comp sci, you’d actually end up working in your field, which isn’t so likely in physics.

How does UF’s physics department compare with that of GT’s? People tell me GT is okay overall, but for engineering, its top notch. But would it be better than UF for physics?? According to an old physics teacher I had, the physics program at UF is probably the strongest in the southeast, along with FSU and GT.

And I was thinking about research in quantum physics or quantum computers

The most recent NRC rankings provide a statistical range for the rankings of physics programs, and GaTech and UF have some overlap, but UF is ranked higher based on mean values by a fair amount.
