UF- Gator nation scholarship + will qualify for in state after a year
UM- Full Presidential Scholarhsip
UGA- In state scholarships
They all come down to be roughly the same price and all appear to be good pre med schools. Which would you pick and which is best from a social/student life perspective?
Congratulations on the scholarships. All three are good schools and academically they are all at the same level.
UM’s location, campus and student body give it a very different feel from the other two, and living in Miami is quite different from living anyplace else in the US. It will be the most diverse of the three schools, with a healthy proportion of students outside the south (particularly the northeast) and from outside the US. Of the three schools, a visit to UM and South Florida to make sure you are comfortable would be a must. If you are not comfortable hearing alot of Spanish in your daily life, you may not like South Florida.
UGA’s student body will also largely in state, and will reflect a classic big southern state school. The OOS students that UGA draws are mostly from the south, so expect the stereotype southern college experience (football and frats).
Like UGA, the vast majority of students at UF will be from in-state, but Florida is a much more diverse state than Georgia. Socially, it will be somewhere between UM and UGA, but it shares the football and frats mentality of UGA.
As far as med school, you can get into med school from any of the three. According to the AAMC, the schools produced the following number of applicants to med school in 2015.
UMiami is different from the others - more wealthy kids from the Northeast with some issues harder to escape (partying). However UM has a med school and attending helps, it’ll be more diverse geographically than the other two, but will be less diverse socio-economically. Miami’s culture is very different from that in either college town.
Attending UGA with Honors and being instate for Georgia would also give you an advantage for med school in Georgia. UGA Honors is one of the best in the nation, with excellent research opportunities, and while partying/sports are huge, they’re a bit easier to escape than at UMiami due to size of non-partakers (sheer numbers rule). Greek life is very big at all but Honors offers a nice community if you don’t want that.
Frankly, all of them have tons of things to do. regardless of where you go you’ll be plenty busy between classes and preparation + activities on campus (a variety of things to do).
To the OP, I think you find which one fits you socially (find your tribe) and pick that one. Like others have said, they are generally academically comparable but I can personally attest to the very different student bodies at UGA and UM (neither is superior, they’re just different).
Maybe 20 years ago when they played in the Orange Bowl, but UM has had attendance problems ever since they moved to Sun Life stadium near the Dade/Broward line. UM claims average attendance of around 45,000 which is half of UF or UGA’s figures, but UM attendance is highly overstated as illustrated in the following article. This have gotten so bad the athletic department has had to photoshop a crowd for promotional materials.
^^Fair point. We were there 20 years ago. I worked in the department that photoshopped the crowd-at the time we were photoshopping Butch Davis to look like less of a jerk in his pictures. It’s kind of sad-I have memories of being in the stadium with 86,000 screaming UM Hurricane fans. That was quite a thing.
Double check your figures. Make sure you are doing fair comparisons of price.
If you qualify for in-state tuition at UF after one year the tuition will be significantly cheaper than Miami which is a private school.
UM is very expensive and even with a presidential scholarship will leave you with about 20-25K tuition bill at their highest level of scholarship. UM has essentially the same tuition for both in-state and OOS students so even if you gained resident status your tuition will not be any lower. UF is 30K for OOS. So yes, if you do NOT get residency in FL the tuition price tags may be equal.
IF you qualify for in-state tuition after a year and you MUST make sure that is a fact. (Parents moving there? You’re independent? Lots of rules apply and it’s not as easy as in the old days.) the tuition at UF will be HUGELY less (around 6K) than UM (25K with your scholarship at the highest level) and that’s even before applying whatever scholarship you received from UF which would lower the cost further…
@gouf78 parents moving to florida this summer. distance is not a primary criteria it just cancels out the finance issue. Parents are willing to pay more for me to be close but the cheaper prices farther away are fine as well
UF and Miami will cost the same for one year.
After you gain residency UF will save you about 20K per year. So 60K less over the next 3 years.
That’s a good chunk of change you could spend on med school.
UF and Miami are totally different flavors.
UF is slightly higher ranked but it just really depends on you. This is a good example of “fit”.
If you want more of a traditional big college experience go to UF. Great sports, clubs, events. Large friendly student body. Plenty to do. Big pretty campus with a small town feel. Lots of trees. Can get cold in winter and very hot in the summer.
Lots of research opportunities. Shand’s teaching hospital. Many majors so if you change your mind about pre-med you can find something else.
Miami is…well, Miami. Some people adore Miami. It’s a big town You’d probably need a car to experience it.
While the town of Gainesville has grown up around UF, University of Miami is plopped in the town (mainly in Coral Gables which is very pretty)… It is a nice campus. Significantly smaller in size than UF. . It’s a private college with a big tuition. Moderate to hot weather year round.
Universities like UF and UGA are much more than the stereotypes of “football and frats”. No real advice to the OP since he/she hasn’t said anything about what experience he/she looking to have at college. However, the Honors college is appealing and a plus in UGA’s favor.
