I graduated from high school and been going to FIU for free these two past years as a pre med student majoring in biology. I applied to UF as a transfer and I got in. So far I have 82 credit hours from FIU and if I stay there I will stay debt free by the time I graduate. I have shadowed doctors and done volunteer work and research these two year Ive spent at FIU and I am able to say that the science department faculty knows who I am. All I have left is the MCAT, boost up my GPA a little bit more, more research experience, and graduation. If I decide to attend UF, I will at least take out a $4000 loan but my plan is to go Navy once I graduate from Undergrad to attend med school. I feel like I’ve established myself at FIU, but at the same time I still feel that UF has way better programs than FIU for science majors and pre meds, but that means that I would start everything from the beginning. Should I transfer to UF or just stay at FIU?
Stay at FIU. You have nothing to gain by going to UF…only to lose and get loans.
Premed is lower division classes. There is no such thing as transferring to UF for better classes for premeds. The MCAT doesn’t have material on it from upper division classes.
Stay put and do well. Your current profs know you and will write your LORs.
If you were to transfer, it would be harder for you to get LORs…plus why would a prof at UF write you a glowing LOR when he/she will have known 100+ other premeds for 3+ years?
You don’t just “go Navy” to get med school paid for. The selection process is competitive.
Not only is it competitive, but many kids end up changing their minds about a military/doctor career. My son applied and was awarded Navy and Air Force scholarships for med school. In the end, he turned them down once he decided that he didn’t want to go that route.
Stay at FIU, remain debt free, and work towards maintaining a strong GPA and getting a good MCAT score.
