UF with little to know extracurriculars

I have just submitted my application. After, I’ve been reading and watching people talking about how they did not get accepted. It’s really got me worried because some of them have a long list of extracurriculars and programs that they have been a part of during highschool. I have almost none because of my family limitations. My mother has been a single parent since 2010, she is in the army/national guard, working part time, and going to college at the same time. On top of that, I have 4 siblings. Im just wondering if they take into consideration that some people don’t even have the oppurtunity to participate. I filled out the section on the application but im wondering if they would actually consider me. I am also enlisted in the Army reserves as a high school student. I do want to participate once i get into college but im wondering if they will even consider me as a candidate

Don’t worry, since you indicated your circumstances, all of this will be taken into consideration. Schools know not every student has the time, the money or the logistics to participate in a number of EC’s. As long as you have strong SAT/ACT scores, a good GPA and took some rigorous classes, you should be fine! And, I mean you must have done one or two things hopefully that display an interest of yours.

UF definitely has an unpredictable and difficult admissions process. I’m worried too haha, so don’t stress out. You’ve done what you could, all that’s left is to see what admissions officers think. I hope you get in (as do I)!

Thanks I really appreciate it!

Florida has holistic admissions. Stats are still the most important part of the application, but I think they will look very favorably on your army reserve participation.

In general 50% of admissions is based on academics, while 50% is based on non-academic factors, like EC’s, work, volunteering, etc.

Of course, you have to have acceptable grades/test scores, or the non-academic factors don’t matter.

What UF cares about, is how you spent your time. They don’t want folks to simply go to classes and then stayed home and played video games. In your case, they will see how you had to balance school with helping care for your younger siblings. They will give that a lot of weight, as long as you made your situation clear in your application. I think you’re fine (on non-academic factors).

Good Luck!

I do think they take family circumstances into consideration. Hopefully you used your essay to emphasize how your role in the family helped make you the person you are.

Good luck!
