UGA EA Application Filed! Chances?

My daughter submitted her EA application yesterday. She has a 3.926 GPA (recalculated according to UGA standards), is ranked in the top 7% of her class in a large urban high school in Massachusetts, all honors, high-honors + 6 AP classes and 3 dual enrollment classes. SAT is 1660.

the sat scores a little low

It is low which is disappointing. She did prepare and sit for the SAT again on Oct. 5. We are hopeful. I was somewhat encouraged by reading the UGA Admissions Blog as it seems to indicate that the order of importance in considering applicantions is GPA, rigor and SATs.

good luck on your daughter!i am a hs senior too and i also applied ea but to different schools.and i took the oct sat as well.wish both of us get better scores this time!

She probably has a fantastic chance! UGA accepts a high number of students since the school is so big! I live in Georgia, and I applied EA as well. My scores are similar. I have a higher SAT but not by much. If she doesn’t get in early she will probably get deferred. There’s a low chance she will jus get rejected. Good luck!

klkl3045 and IBkid24…Best of luck to both of you!

A high number of students does not correlate to anything. Acceptance rates are based on number of applications. Institutions focus on quality - not quantity. There are only so many seats at University of Georgia.

That SAT score is extremely low for UGA, but the rest of her application looks fantastic. How is her ECs?

Here is last year’s academic profile. We expect UGA to become slightly more selective this year(continuing the trend):
https://www.admissions.uga.edu/article/first-year-class-profile.html

Her ECs are very good. She is an athlete:4 years of field hockey and lacrosse (elected JV Lacrosse Co-Capt. her sophomore year) plus one season of indoor track; over 150 hours of volunteer time (local library, food bank); interned for a Member of Congress; Summer jobs include camp counselor for pre-school aged kids, babysitting, working at a farm. She also served on student advisory board to high school Headmaster at very large urban high school.

Her SAT for CR is 600, Math is 520, if this makes any difference, as these seem to be the most important scores of the three.

Halcyontimes… The acceptance rate is still high, so it does matter. UGA does not look at SAT scores evenly with rigor and GPA. An average SAT score will not keep her out. Also, ECs do not play a part in the EA application.

Any more thoughts?

SAT is a little low. GPA and rigor are spot on!

Hoping she gets that SAT score up a little in the October test!

How does UGA recalculate GPA?

This from UGA Admissions website:

High School Grades
Carry the Most Weight

We make no bones about it: more than any other single factor, the grades that you earn in your high school courses play the most important role in determining your competitiveness for admission to UGA. Since there are so many different grading scales, not to mention weighting methodologies, we recalculate a GPA for every first-year applicant based only on academic courses taken in the five core areas (with the addition of AP Art and Music Theory courses). Using a standard 4.0 scale [see chart], we convert each grade earned according to the grading scale in use at your high school at the time the course was taken.

Additionally, if a weight is not already added to an individual grade, we raise by the equivalent of one half-letter grade (0.5) each grade earned in an AP or IB course. Unlike nationally- or internationally-normed AP and IB curricula, there is no standardized methodology for the designation of Honors courses. Consequently, it is UGA’s policy not to add any weight for these courses when recalculating a student’s GPA for admission. We do consider the number of Honors courses a student takes, however, when determining the rigor of his or her overall curriculum.

My daughter’s GPA as calculated by her high school is 4.2 (out of 4.67) Recalculated per UGA standards it is 3.926 (out of 4.0). UGA considers 3 things for early action: GPA, rigor and test scores.Test scores are given the least weight.

Anybody else anxiously hoping decisions will be out this week?

Yes, but I doubt they will be. For the past two years, they have come out about four and a half weeks after the EA deadline, and both times it was on a Friday that coincided with the Friday before Thanksgiving. This year Thanksgiving is a week later, so there is an extra week between the deadline and the Friday before Thanksgiving. I suspect they’ll go with the Friday before Thanksgiving, which is the 22nd. Three years ago it was December 3rd, so we’re still doing well with 11/22.

Thank you for that insight, Nancy. I really had expected this week. I’m glad you pointed these things out so that my daughter and I can adjust our expectations…Best of luck to all waiting to hear!
