UGA Honors

How prestigious/good is it? And if you're in it, does it really make a difference?

I'm trying to decide between NYU and UGA Honors, and while UGA offers the campus and "college unity" thing, I'm afraid I won't fit in at all. I'm not anti-social or anything, but I don't like getting drunk every weekend or Greek life, and all of my friends are what you'd consider "GA Tech" kids.

Hey man I feel like I am in the same boat as you. I am deciding between UGA Honors and Ga Tech. I feel like I would fit in more with the Tech kids, but I want to go to UGA for their Honors Program. However, I hear the Honors kids are different in that they definately take academics seriously and that they are known to "leave their dorm doors closed."

Leave their dorm doors closed? Perhaps some of them, but Honors students on the whole are just as social as everyone else at UGA, they just take the time to focus on academics first before going out. In the honors dorm especially there are plenty of intellectuals, though I'd advise you to send in your housing deposit ASAP in order to secure a seat in Myers.

I've gotten the feeling from talking with Tech students that while UGA has a "work hard, play hard" atmosphere it's more "work hard, work HARDER" at Tech. For the academic masochists out there, that might be fun, but probably not to the general populace. There is definitely a social life at both places, but at UGA there appear to be more options. You definitely don't have to "get drunk every weekend", but the option to party (often with other honors kids, including highly, highly successful ones) is almost always available.

And again, you can make UGA as hard as you want it to be if you want to say, get a joint ba/masters in four years, triple major, or do groundbreaking research in a lab, all of which the honors program can help facilitate. But at the end of the day, you'll find there's always a social life to go back to for the times you don't have work to do. Being in Honors is definitely a huge bonus in terms of the quality of honors classes, early honors registration, and other opportunities, but you do have to be self-motivated in order to take advantage of all the opportunities. There are plenty of people who are available to help you, but are not going to hold your hand and tell you what exactly to do.

Tech is probably the best choice for someone who knows what he/she wants to do and wants to experience a challenging curriculum before heading on to a career. UGA Honors would be better for self-starters who want a more well-rounded education and like to try out different things, especially outside of the classroom like study abroads, internships, and student organizations.

Is there enough room in Myers for first-year Honor students, or is Myers hard to get into for first-year Honors students?

Well I registered for Myers today anyway as an EA student invited to Honors....am I too late or will I get in?

I know a lot of honors freshmen in myers and apparently even some non-honors people get in there every year so you probably have a good shot.

How does it compare to UNC-CH, Vig?

How does it compare to GA Tech?

merkur- short answer, based on what I've seen and talking to students from both schools, is that UNC is a better school on the whole but that their honors program is much more bare-bones than UGA's.

bigman- I tried to answer your question on Tech in my earlier response.

How should I go about finding a roommate? Does anyone know of anyone that did "random" and got a bad roommate? And how does being an RA work? I hear you have to be a sophmore to do it.

Also, in terms of AP Credit. Should I take all my AP Credit? Like for example, I am afraid of taking credit for AP Chemistry and jumping straight into Organic Chem. I will have 30+ hours if I take all the credit. Is it rec.'d to take all the credit?

I'd say take all the AP credit and go for it- yeah Ochem is hard, but if you're willing to put the work into it it's managable. Otherwise you'll just end up in classes you've already taken being bored with the same stuff you already know.

There's a roommate search function provided by UGA I think, but I just roomed with a guy I had met via facebook and it turned out well.

It is unfair to label the Honors kids at UGA as people who “leave their doors closed.”

Most people don’t take notice, but Meyers is the only dorm with automatically closing doors. All the other dorms have doors that will just hang open, which means more people have open doors.

Dude, if Orgo. is anything like it is here, go for it. I took it as a freshmen, and it was very difficult, but amazing. I also established a great friendship with the prof. which is starting to open up a lot of doors. I’ll be doing a research project for him and hopefully getting positive results on time to present at the ACS meeting next spring. Hopefully as an honor student there, you’ll have a similar opportunity to get close to profs. Gen. chem. is very good here (also difficult if you don’t have experience, and perhaps even if you have AP/IB credit for 141, you’ll struggle at the beginning of 142) and taught very well, but is nowhere near as stimulating as orgo, so I took that after being invited to do so. Best decision ever. Maybe consider taking gen. chem. if you are pre-med and plan on applying to a school that does not want AP credit. Also, does UGA seriously take beyond 8 classes of AP/IB credit? We cap ours at 8 (32 hours here), and are gonna drop it to 6 (24) soon. And then many depts. won’t even take it, like psyche and history. And languages typically only use it for placement (then again languages here are a beast). You can basically only accept sciences (16 hours of this possible), AP government credits (8 possible), calc. (8), and the freshmen writing requirement(4) (which is fun anyway, so I don’t why people exempt it. They just end up screwing up in later writing requirements, and social science courses)

Anyway I have been up there briefly (Africa night) before and will probably visit this weekend again (my friend who goes here is at UGA interning for the Duke TIP program), and I want to explore. Is Meyers a new dorm? Just curious how ours stack up to y’alls. I really liked UGA’s campus when I visited, though it’s a bit hilly lol.

Have you found a roommate yet?
