UGA life?

I realize that this is sort of an odd/ ambiguous question, but what is the general atmosphere like at UGA?
How is the Greek scene? School spirit? How do people act toward out of sate students? What is the party scene like?

I can look up as much as I want about academic programs, stats, graduation rates, employment after graduation, etc. But at this point I need to figure out where I want to be living for four years, not just where I want to be studying.

I know that it is a huge school and probably have multiple feels to it depending on what type of person you are. I plan on going greek if that helps...

I don’t attend UGA but I have visited and I didn’t really get the impression of a large student body/huge campus-type school. To be honest, I thought the campus was a bit on the small side. But I went during the day when most people were in their classes, so I guess I didn’t get to see the large student body.

My first impression was that most people just mind their own business. Like I didn’t see a lot of people go out of their way to talk to others who weren’t their friends. I’m not really sure if this is a bad or good thing though.

While I was in Athens, I kind of got the “artsy” feel. Downtown Athens seemed kinda hippie-ish to a degree and my mom pointed out that everybody there wore TOMS.

The tour guides were extremely friendly…but then again that’s there job. I would have loved it if everyone on campus were like that…but I didn’t interact with any of the students.

I didn’t really have any impressions about the buildings or classes or anything. I take that back, the architecture for some of the buildings were pretty interesting. If you’re interested in ancient Greece and the different types of architectural designs developed in antiquity, you’ll be pretty impressed with the architecture. But if you won’t care about that type of stuff…then it won’t affect you.

Some parts of campus looked extremely nice. The Tate Student Center, for example, was gorgeous (the interior, that is).

I really wanted to go into the dorms and look at them but we couldn’t because it was nearly impossible trying to find parking (we didn’t have a parking permit).

School spirit, although reserved, seemed to be a huge component in the students’ lives. I The tour guides (yeah I know it’s their job to have school spirit) constantly talked about how the football team sucked this year and I heard a couple of employees talk about it as well. I think football is a huge thing there. I also saw some students walking around with UGA clothes on.

Overall, from what I saw, it looked more like a school that was pretty quiet and…isolated? I couldn’t really comprehend how it was ranked #1 party school in the nation, but then again I did visit the school during the day on Thursday. Next time I’ll go on Friday night and see what happens.

I just think the experience is based on who you surround yourself with. If you’re into partying, there’s probably a chance to party. If you’re into art and drama, there’s probably an art and drama scene downtown and on campus. Remember, UGA receives several thousand applications; (thanks to HOPE) there’s definitely the chance that the school will encompass a large variety of people from all walks of life.

Coolpg, for a first impression and not being a student, that’s not too far off base.

Greek life at UGA is HUGE if you’re actually part of it. Greeks practically govern a whole street (where all the houses are located). They always seem to have a lot of stuff going on. I’m pretty sure you can thank the greek life for our #1 party school ranking (though I wouldn’t say it’s all them). From the outside, greeks tend to fit a stereotypical image as a whole, though I’m sure as individuals, they’re unique (except when they dress the same…).

Downtown is the main “party” place that most people go to. Weekends start Thursday night. Greeks seem to have a lot of socials planned all the time. I’m sure if you’re connected with the Greek system, there will be a party you can find every weekend. If not, downtown is always open and is always bustling with all the bars and clubs.

School spirit is great as long as you surround yourself with people who feel the same way. Games are really cheap, and there’s nothing cooler than your first football game in Stanford. Maybe if our team was better, it would be even better…

Where you’re from probably doesn’t matter. You’re pretty much in the minority if you’re not from anywhere around Atlanta.

The general day to day atmosphere at UGA is pretty chill. There are a heck of a lot of people on campus, but you kinda just tend to ignore everyone…at least I do. As coolrg said, everyone kinda just sticks to their own business. But if you want, it’s not too hard to strike up a conversation with someone in class. I think for the most part it’s pretty friendly - not in the way that we’ll just strike up a conversation with a random person in a random situation, but if a conversation happens, you won’t be brushed off.

To be honest, your experience at UGA is completely up to you. There are so many people here and so many things to do that you can choose whatever you want your experience to be. It’s all here. You just have to be proactive about it.
