What is UGA like?

Hey Dawgs fans! So I would love to know what life at UGA is like. Is the campus as beautiful as people say? What are the football games like? Do Southerners look down upon Northerners? What is student life like in general? I'm from Pennsylvania, and there's literally no way that I can make it down to Georgia for a campus tour. So now I'm relying on what all of you say!

I don't even know if I can get accepted. I have a 3.8 UW GPA, 1570 SAT superscore, and a ton of EC's. I am also a black, first generation male if that helps at all. I will apply RD as an Economics major.

PLEASE give me your views of UGA! I want to apply here, but I always worry about applying to schools I haven't taken a tour of

The campus is very beautiful. The architecture at UGA is classical and Antebellum style.

The football games are like any other SEC football school. They’re big and boisterous. School spirit is big at UGA.

Not at all, UGA has that Southern hospitality feel. Think Paula Dean. OOS students are welcome. Though the state, along with the region is widely conservative, UGA’s students tend to be more moderate from what I’ve seen. Back when I was at UGA, things were different. Politics stay out of the lives of the day-to-day student.

Student life is vibrant at UGA. There are over 700 registered student organizations on campus. I know the Guide-dog Foundation is also very popular among UGA students. As with most large, flagship universities, the party atmosphere is there for those who enjoy it. Fraternities and sororities are very active and popular at UGA.

Your scores are a little low for UGA, but I would encourage application. You have a pretty good GPA.

Good luck!

Go Dawgs

Is that 1570 reading and math? or does it include writing?

FutureDoctor31, I was EXACTLY like you. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania and I currently attend UGA. I am currently a freshman premed major at UGA. Now to address your questions…

Is the campus as beautiful as people say?
-YES!!! The campus is extremely beautiful. Sometimes, between classes, I just walk around campus and take in the views. I’ll lay on benches and just stare at the clear blue sky because we never got much of that in Pennsylvania. The campus is exquisite. It has red brick architecture and reminds me of Harvard’s campus. It’s a really beautiful campus.

What are the football games like?

They’re CRAZY. Literally, all you smell is alcohol on gamedays and see grown adults getting arrested for public intoxication. But don’t let that deter you- the school spirit down here is insane. If you say that you’re a UGA student, you instantly become friends with strangers or at least get some type of admiration. Football is a religion down here (but not pro-football like it is up north).

Do Southerners look down upon Northerners?

Actually, I think it is the other way around. When I talk to my friends from up north, they’re usually the ones making fun of me for coming down here. When I tell Georgia natives that I’m from the north, the first thing they say is, “I don’t think I could ever live there. People are mean and it’s too cold.” It’s my Northern friends who make fun of southern accents and the word “ya’ll.” Athens is okay in that it’s pretty diverse and educated, but if you leave Athens, it gets pretty redneck Southern. My plan is to attend UGA all four years of undergrad, and go back up North for Medical school. Don’t get me wrong, the South is nice- and I can see why some people would want to stay here for their whole lives- but when you’re raised in a totally different region like Pennsylvania, you adapt to an entirely different culture which makes it difficult to adapt. Don’t ever say anything mean about the South though, because Southerners get angry super fast and start calling you a dumb yankee.

What is student life like in general?
-It honestly depends on your major. Because I am a science major, I can only really tell you about my personal experience and my observations (so don’t quote me). Science majors don’t have time to party. Therefore, we usually spend most of our time studying. However, I know plenty of people who are so swooned by their first time of independence that they go out every night and are digging themselves into a hole. If you aren’t the partying type, you will find plenty of students like that. If you like to attend parties, you’ll definitely find plenty of that too. Greek life is HUGE around here. If you’re not into that stuff, it’s merely an annoyance. If you are into that stuff, it’s like a family.

I don’t even know if I can get accepted. I have a 3.8 UW GPA, 1570 SAT superscore, and a ton of EC’s. I am also a black, first generation male if that helps at all. I will apply RD as an Economics major.

I think your GPA is right in the middle. If your SAT is from all 3 sections, then you HAVE to bring that up. If it’s just math and reading, I think that is good enough to get into Honors. Honestly, I don’t think being a black first generation male matters at all but I don’t think it would hurt to put into your application.

I was a very good student in high school who had aspirations to attend top-tier schools (well not that UGA isn’t a top tier school but I wanted to attend an Ivy). I’m glad I chose UGA however because I love my professors and the coursework. It is just the perfect amount for me. I think you’ll like it here a lot. Good luck with your application and please feel free to message me any time if you have any questions. I haven’t signed onto College Confidential in probably 9 months now and I’m so glad I randomly did tonight because I think that I can really help you with your decision. Whatever you choose to do, I’m sure it will be the right one. :)

Great reply, chronome. Much more helpful when students, rather than parents, give honest (and enthusiastic) opinions.

I agree with all stated

“I don’t even know if I can get accepted. I have a 3.8 UW GPA, 1570 SAT superscore, and a ton of EC’s. I am also a black, first generation male if that helps at all. I will apply RD as an Economics major.”

If that SAT is from all three sections then I would seriously consider a retake.

Was my answer not acceptable helpfulandtrying? :D

UGA is an awesome school.

Thanks for your replies everyone! I’d like to give a special thank you to chronome because getting an opinion from an actual student, especially one similar to me, is a great resource to have! Thank you also for mentioning the distance from UGA to Abbey West! I’m definitely applying, but will most likely retake the SAT again since the 1570 superscore is out of all three sections

Sorry MD1785. Didn’t mean to step on your toes. I just meant to say that it was nice that a current student was responding. Your answer was great, too. I’m in the same category as you, a parent trying to help one of his or her children.

I’m re-reading my comment from this morning. It does appear to be a slam towards you, and I surely didn’t mean it to be!

No worries. Although I will say that students SHOULD pay attention to what parents have to say about schools. It doesn’t take a lot of brain power to guess what my kids were discussing the summer before their freshman year, and it wasn’t hard to guess when I was a student at UGA!

Parents try to bring out UGA’s academic growth and prosperity out in the open as well. Work hard, play hard mentality. I highly, highly recommend all students thinking about applying to or attending UGA take a look at Halcyontimes’s thread regarding UGA’s growth. My post may be a little biased, but it’s completely honest.

You all have a fun four years, but a rewarding four years if you take the initiative. I said it before and I’ll say it again. UGA wasn’t the same school when I graduated so many years ago, and it wasn’t the same school when each of my kids graduated from the university. Pay attention to the fun and work. You all are making up an even better generation of Bulldogs, a generation not nearly what your parents had.

Well, that’s enough from me!
Go Dawgs and good luck futuredoctor. You will definitely need to bring up that SAT score. Best of luck!

I can answer this in one simple word: awesome

I’m a UGA freshmen, so I would be glad to answer any questions :)

North campus is absolutely beautiful! Old, antebellum-style architecture, nice gardens and fountains…it’s just fantastic. The rest of campus is more hodge-podge building wise, some being the same older style, while others (like the student center) being modern. Everything is very nice though  There are lots of secret gems all over campus for lying around or studying. It’s absolutely fantastic…I spent SO much time outside this fall it wasn’t even funny.

Football here is insane! UGA is busting with school spirit and being in the SEC conference, football is a huge deal. Game days have been some of my favorite memories thus far-the tailgating, unity among students during the games, etc. The first time you enter Sanford stadium is unreal.

UGA is full of southern hospitality-no one looks down on Northerners! Everyone is super friendly here and I don’t know of anyone from the North who has had a bad experience regarding that. If you try and talk to friendly people, no one will care if you’re not from around here. In fact, they will think it’s awesome since UGA is dominated with students from the state.

Student life here various depending on your major and interests, being pretty diverse. The Greek system is a big deal here (25% of the campus is Greek), but independents have tons of friends and opportunities as well! Personally, I’m Greek and love it, but have a lot of non-Greek friends as well. It’s a big commitment, and not for everyone, but I advise looking into it. Science majors have a much more demanding workload and don’t have much free time at all, but generally speaking, most students are able to have a balanced lifestyle. In general, I would say UGA is a “work hard, play hard” school-most people are studious and study throughout the week and then go downtown/party/do other fun activities (and there are tons of things to do if you’re not into the alcohol scene) on the weekend. We also have some AMAZING on-campus ministries if you’re religious. Like I said before, students have a variety of interests and there is something for everyone.

Oh, and living on campus really isn’t bad and is a good thing for freshmen-I have met so many people in my dorm and it’s a good transition from high school (living your parents) to college (living on your own). Good social opportunities and study ones-there’s always going to be someone taking your classes and can help you at obscure hours.

Good luck with everyone  And if you have any more questions, let me know!

You guys have just convinced me to apply! Thank you so much everyone!

Hey FutureDoctor, I sent you a message but I don’t think it went through. Can you see it?

I did, and thanks so much for sending it to me! Since I don’t have school tomorrow, I will complete my UGA app! :D

Even though UGA lost to Alabama, this video gives me a great sense of school pride. I think once you watch it, you’ll want to be a bulldawg too.

Where you see the people dancing is the Student Center plaza. That’s where a lot of fairs go on (and they also have farmer’s markets and singers and random mishaps)

Can someone who’s a little older also give you an answer? I grew up in New Jersey, and went to UGA quite a few years ago. I absolutely loved it, AND, it’s much better now in so many ways. Yes, the campus is beautiful. As many have said, north campus is the original area, so you will see the buildings all lined up on each side. The rest of the is more modern and very nice. East campus, the newest area, is where the Ramsey Center, the student athletic center is, the health center, and some other buildings.

Do NOT worry about being from the north. Even when I attended, nobody cared. I really don’t even believe most students have southern accents at UGA since many are from the Atlanta area. However, if they do, it’s a plus in my opinion. The students are super-friendly and there are literally hundreds of clubs to choose from.

Football games have to be seen to be believed. It’s an all-day thing, full of tradition. I fell in love with it from the first game, and it’s among the best experiences of any school in the nation.

In short, UGA is the perfect combination of strong academics and a fantastic social scene. If you want a truly WELL-ROUNDED college experience, you couldn’t possibly find a better place. Good luck and “GO DAWGS!”.

Hey everyone! I’m reviving my old thread that I created nearly a year ago. If you remember me, I was somebody who had below average stats but high hopes for UGA. As it turns out, I never applied. I just simply procrastinated for too long. Now, having just graduated from high school last week, I now know that I will be attending Northampton Community College in Bethlehem Township, PA this fall. I think I made the right decision because I now have the chance to re-apply to the schools that turned me down (Maryland and Penn State-University Park. I was accepted into Penn State-Altoona, however) and apply to schools where I had little to no chance of acceptance (UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, USC). Here’s some basic info about NCC and what I plan to do there:

-Northampton Community College is a top 50 CC nationally
-I was accepted into their honors program, which requires me to take 12 credit hours of honors courses and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA.
-If I do maintain that 3.5+ GPA, I have a really good chance of joining Phi Theta Kappa.
-I plan on participating in several on-campus activities, including Student Government.
-Since NCC has dorms, I will be staying on campus.
-I am a SMaRT Scholar, which is a scholarship program for select students entering STEM professions.

More info about me:
-HS GPA: 3.8 UW
-SAT: 1560/2400 superscored SAT (CR: 620, M: 440, W: 510)
-Tons of EC’s
-Work experience: POS Associate (Cashier) at Kohl’s from 10/25/12-Present (Most likely ending between 8/15/13-8/22/13)

Can you see me realistically being accepted into UGA for fall transfer admission?
