UGA vs. Auburn vs. Bama

I am a senior in high school trying to make a decision between these three schools. I have been accepted to all three and I love them all. I am planning to major in International Business or Political Science. Any opinions?

COA for each school ?

Were you admitted to honors college for any of these schools ?

I am not worried about money for any of the schools, I was not admitted into any of the honors colleges. I am also very interested in rushing a fraternity.

Bama draws more OOS students, if that’s important to you.

I am not too worried but it does play a small role in my decision making. I am from Montana so it would be fun to meet people from all across the country and not the majority from in-state.

In my very limited experience, I have met many students who applied to UGA & Auburn, but few who have applied to all three. Usually students seem to have a clear preference for either Auburn or Alabama, while Georgia residents accepted to UGA often have an easy choice based on costs alone.

All three have a very prominent & active Greek social scene.

Georgia has about 90% of students from in state, while Auburn is at 65% & Alabama at 40%.

To me, Alabama has the most Southern feel even though it has the most national student body. Georgia has the most sophisticated student body due to those from the Atlanta region. Auburn has the largest number of engineering students.

Auburn has about 22,000 students. Georgia has about 27,000 & Alabama has 30,000 full time students. Auburn has more male students while Alabama & Georgia have an imbalance of more females than males.

Without more, it seems to come down to personal preference in your case.

Anywhere but Bama lol.

Do you plan on going to Law School? UA has a very highly ranked Law School if that matters and a well respected Poli Sci program. Last I checked, UA Law was ranked higher than that of UGA and Emory. But the undergrad Poli Sci programs at those schools are a little (UGA) and a lot (Emory) more highly ranked than UA’s. UA’s Business School plans to build a very impressive new building that should be finished by your junior year of college. https://giving.ua.edu/hewsonhall/ Are you in state?

@Atlanta68
Maybe uga’s but not Emory’s

For business, if you are in state or have some additional funding, go to UGA - from a very, very pround Auburn mom. UGA has a better business school. If you were engineering, definately Auburn, even out of state.

https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings I stand corrected, but they are very closely ranked, with Emory at 22 and UA 26. However, I do recall seeing UA ranked ahead of Emory five to ten years ago.

Think about whether you are an auto admit to the business school or have to apply in your sophomore year.

Have you visited any of the three? I would suggest going on campus and talking to students and faculty in your major. That has helped my son to quickly rule out some schools and narrow down his choices.

In another thread OP wrote that he is a Montana resident.

N=1 here…our daughter has only toured UGA but loved it, has friends who have toured Bama and really liked it (but ultimately chose to go elsewhere) and I had another friend whose daughter went to Auburn last Fall (loving it prior during a tour) but didn’t last a semester as she had a hard time fitting in with the in-state kids.

Maybe not very helpful, save to say that every kid/instance is different. I agree with @chickenlady - tour first if possible and decide for him/yourself.

Congratulations on your great choices! What are your costs for each? Are you a direct admit to the business schools of each? Are they all accepting AP credits? Have you looked into extras - sports? Greek Life? Honors? Study Abroad? You say you love them all so I would go with the best value.

I have toured all 3 with my children. My dd decided between Bama and Auburn and we know she could have been happy at both. We visited each multiple times before she decided. They are both amazing schools and she ultimately choose Alabama. She is having a great experience and doesn’t regret a thing. My son doesn’t want to follow his sister and has toured UGA. He really liked it but I’m not sure it is in his top. UGA seems to me more of a State School for Georgia kids where Bama feels much more diverse. Auburn seemed much smaller and more personal then both of the others and a little less “polished”. That was just my experience. Again, all great schools.

I am not in state but thank you so much on the information! It all helps so much! I would have to apply to the business school.

Thank you so much for the information! I am planning on joining Greek life. I also plan on doing an intermural sport or something along those lines. I have visited all three and loved all three which makes the decision even harder. I spoke with department heads and many students. I really love Alabama but Auburn and Georgia are a close second and third. My brother is a student at Auburn and I would love to spend a year there with him but also I preferred Alabama which makes him furious. My whole family would like me to go to Auburn which makes me feel bad if I do choose Alabama.

First off, I want to say Congratulations. All of these schools are amazing in their own respect.
When is comes to these three schools its safe too say that the University of Georgia is by far the most reputable with it being ranked as a top 15 public university and a top 50 university nationally (per US News Report Rankings). So if you’re looking at the aspect of reputation UGA is the most distinguished and a premier public institution. (https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/university-of-georgia-1598). Also, the honors program at UGA has been deemed one of the premier programs in the COUNTRY. Filled with students that rival many elite private institutions. So if you have a chance to apply to that it would be a HUGE PLUS.

If you are going by reputation such as US News Top public schools, UGA is ranked far higher (#13) than Auburn or UA (#52, #61).
One other big factor that sold my daughter on UGA was the town of Athens which is always ranked very high for a college town. In addition to greek life, you’ll find plenty going on in Athens. Good luck with your decision.
