I cannot decide which college to attend this fall! Currently, it's between The University of Georgia and Auburn University. I visited this weekend and loved them both. I liked UGA more, but I think I would still be happy at Auburn.

Would it be better to be at UGA or Auburn Honors Program? I want to go to law school and plan on double majoring political science/international relations with plans of studying abroad. I'm just wondering if it would be better to be in the Honors Program at a less prestigious school (Auburn), or NOT in the Honors Program at a more prestigious school (UGA).

I don’t think there is a difference AT ALL in prestige between UGa and Auburn…they’re both mid-tier schools. I’m not sure what “prestige” you’re referring to.

Can we safely assume that you’re from Minnesota? Would both schools cost you abou the same? Is money an issue at all? Or can your family easily pay for either school and pay for law school?

If paying for law school will be an issue, then I would go to the school that will cost you the least.

Getting into law school is more about LSAT score.

Oh, I know they are both great schools and I’m very happy to be accepted at both! I guess I’m just going off of previous ranking for public schools. UGa tends to fall in top 20, while Auburn is top 50.

Auburn would cost me $20k a year and UGa would cost me about $25k a year. My parents make good money, but I have a little sister who will be going to college in 2 years so I am looking to pay less. And yes, I am from Minnesota!

So, you don’t think there is a big difference between Auburn Honors and UGa? (still waiting to hear back from UGa Honors… not sure I will get in, I have a 30, 3.8 GPA, lots of extras, etc)

*I guess I’m just going off of previous ranking for public schools. UGa tends to fall in top 20, while Auburn is top 50.
*

That does not mean that UGa is any more prestigious. Believe me. People across this country are not going…oooh…you went to UGa. Auburn is in the top 40 of Top Publics.

Yes, UGa is a good school, but it’s not “prestigious”…it’s not like it’s UVA or Berkeley. Seriously, once you get past the top 25 National U’s (which includes the privates), prestige is really non-existent.

Auburn would cost me $20k a year

Do you have a 2/3 tuition scholarship to Auburn?

Did you get a scholarship from UGa? If so, how much?

I got 10k a year from UGa, and yes I got a 2/3rds tuition scholarship from Auburn.

I also got into Boston College and UMichigan, waiting to hear back from UVa and W&M. I’m not looking for “prestige”. I’m from Minnesota… I’m merely hoping for insight on Southern schools because I’m not as familiar with their reputations. Sorry if I used the wrong word.

I wouldn’t commit to a school based on Honors Program. Don’t know how much weight that is given by employer or grad schools. Acceptance is based on SAT/GPA.

Both my sons were offered Honors College/program. Have to take a certain number of honors courses. Son #1 can have profs give him extra work for it, take honors classes or higher level classes. He had the time to take advantage of this while double majoring and taking a minor. Son #2 did not want honors from any school. Double engineering major and no time for any added courses and not interested. I think he made the right decision.

I think you should base your decision on which school you like better and see yourself as a good fit, with good programs.

(Son#1 may be at UGA next year for law school. Still waiting to hear form the remaining schools, but UGA remains on the list that he is still interested in. We’ll see.

crazed- thank you for the insight! That’s the information I’m looking for. Glad things worked for your sons… I LOVE UGa and I think I would fit in there perfectly, so I think I’ll go there since Honors doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Minnesota37: Congrats on your acceptances so far and good luck on the ones that you are still waiting on.

I don’t have any personal experience with Auburn, so no insight there. I do have a daughter who is a freshman in the Honors program at UGA. She is very happy there. Won’t bore you with details, but let me know if you have specific questions.

As a grad of UVA, I can say that it is a wonderful school. I was torn between UVA and W & M as a undergrad. Couldn’t go wrong with either of those.

I wouldn’t give up on UGA honors just yet. If they follow the same time line as last year, acceptances will start going out in early March and continue through early April. And there is always the option of applying at the end of your first semester.

But aside from early registration perks, you can take advantage of CURO and many other aspects of UGA without being in the Honors program.

If you are serious about UGA, I recommend paying the small housing deposit ASAP. Housing looks at when you paid your deposit for determining priority.

*I’m from Minnesota… I’m merely hoping for insight on Southern schools because I’m not as familiar with their reputations. Sorry if I used the wrong word.

*

What I meant was…that all mid-tiers can be considered roughly the same as far as quality…they’re all good schools…whether it’s UNebraska, UColorado, UGa, Auburn, UDel, etc…

If you like UGa the best, then go there…If you like another school even more, go there. If money isn’t an issue, the just go where you feel is best for you.

You just need to do well in school and score well on the LSAT…
