Ugh... ACT Reading - Can't improve my score?!

Hey guys,

So I am writing to you all after about 1 month of trying to improve my ACT Reading, starting since like the 10th of January. I followed EVERY single tip I saw online…yet it just isn’t working. My score has been fluctuating around the same marks since I began trying to improve…

I am trying to score a 36 on the ACT this upcoming June. To begin, I work on improving my worst subject, Reading. Every Reading test that I have taken for the past month has scored around the 32-33 range.

Reading is by far my worst ACT subject and (hopefully) the hardest to improve, with Science and then English and then Math - going down in difficulty for amount of effort put into subjects to get the 36.

Anyway, my method of work has been to take a practice test, correct it, and then for EACH question that I get wrong I write out 3 parts: A. how and why I got the question wrong, B. What will I do to fix my error for next time, and C. the type of question/weakness I have. I’ve done this almost consistently for every single practice test that I have taken over the past month (about 5-10) but it has had no major effect overall.

Something has to change, so I am typing here on this thread to hopefully gain some really good insights from someone who possibly went through the same phase as me. Your helps is MUCH appreciated, as in terms of my goals it will make-or-break my future.

Thanks!

Anybody have any good tips when going over these types of tests?

All of the answers can be found in the texts, so you should be able to verify your answers with the text. Also, make sure that you manage time well enough- read the questions before you read the texts so you know what to look for while reading.

I start by reading the first line of each paragraph so I get a feel for the passage. Then I go right to the questions, starting with the ones like “In lines 42-44.” My first ACT I took I got a 36 in reading.

^ that is helpful.

In addition to that, underline every major concept that each question asks (aside from line reference)

While reading, search for the concepts you underlined and stop once you find exact or similar words. Then read carefully at that part and answer the question related to that concept.

I’ll be trying these methods and let you know how it goes.
