how to improve my ACT reading score :(

Hello. I am really trying hard to improve my ACT reading score. I have done 18 practice tests, read New York Times articles every day for 30 minutes, and read a book per week(mostly fictions by John Grisham). I also did reading comprehension workbook for about an hour and a half a day(for the whole summer). Still, my reading score hasn’t improved a bit. I also went to Huntington to try all kinds of strategies. My English score has improved a lot, but my Reading score is irritating me so much. Any suggestions?

What I found when I was practicing/taking the actual test is that actively underlining phrases/sentences or circling words helped me remember key ideas from the passage when answering the question.

I got a 35 on the June reading. It’s a skill that you can teach yourself easily. You have to just lock in, really try to enjoy the passages, and understand what to underline.

You may also want to tackle certain passages first. I do the shortest/easiest passage first to gain confidence and make myself feel like I’m wayyy ahead of schedule and that I’m doing well on time. Then, I do the science section because the momentum you have after doing an easy section will help you attack the longest and most technical passage.

The reading section is all about attacking the passages quickly so that you never feel pressed for time.

OP
What is your score now and where did you start?

my Reading score is around 21-22 and hasn’t improved since. My English score has improved from 19 to 31, math from 33 to about 35 and science from 27 to 32-33.

dude… @IMBZcandle , are you like me? I’m in exactly the same position! Lol

@IMBZcandle

First you have done a great job moving the other section scores.

I PM’d you some tips that will help you in reading.

I had the same problem, then I changed my reading strategy: I skim(!) the questions first and mark all the line references. This shouldn’t take you longer than a few seconds. Then I start reading the passage and as soon as I come across a line reference I immediately answer the corresponding question.
