UH Manoa vs SDSU

Hi there, I was waitlisted at Cal Poly SLO for animal science so as of now, I am deciding between UH Manoa (animal science major) and SDSU (biology with specialization in zoology major). I am hoping to earn my undergrad and work towards vet school. The tuition costs are somewhat lower at UH but I’m still unsure overall as I’ve heard drawbacks and highlights for both schools. I am a CA resident so SDSU is the closest location wise. Does anyone know anything about these schools and/or these specific majors there? And if so, do you have any input on these universities as a whole?

Thank you so much in advance!

Sincerely,
A currently stressed student

@lj2019: You are saying that the total cost of attendance for UH is less expensive than SDSU as an in-state student? Did you include the cost of transportation and housing in your budget?

Since you are aiming for the Vet school and possibly UC Davis as your in-state option, SDSU would probably be the better choice. Their Biology program is competitive and they have a very good Pre-Professional (Pre-Vet) advising center that will help you in preparing for Vet school.

Also SDSU has better name recognition than UH which could help with your career opportunities. Have you visited both schools? Fit involves the academics, social scene and affordability so it is a very personal decision.

Davis vet is probably harder to get into than some med schools. The odds are that Vet won’t happen, so SDSU is your Plan B. For example, if you change your major, you’ll have a local career service office and alums to contact for jobs. (assumes that you want to live in CA and not HI)

@bluebayou makes some very valid points. Just like Pre-Med students, Pre-Vet students need a plan B if Vet school does not happen. SDSU has an excellent alumni network worth exploring.

Hi there, yes I was granted WUE tuition at UH so it was somewhat cheaper. As for transportation costs, I would be using the campus and city bus passes that are free for UH students. Overall, costs are close to the same so I’m wondering about the academic programs compared to one another. I have visited both campuses and could definitely see myself at both!

Also I would like to thank both of you for your quick & helpful replies! @bluebayou @Gumbymom

@lj2019: In regards to transportation costs, I was speaking of airfare back and forth to California during Winter and possibly summer breaks.

Best of luck with your decision.
