Uh Oh... Is McCain in favor of reenacting the draft...

Is McCain in favor of reenacting the draft or was he just not paying attention to the question being asked of him?

YouTube - John McCain: Town Hall 08/20/08

AUDIENCE MEMBER: Senator McCain I truly hope you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question though. Disable veterans, especially in this state have horrible conditions, their medical is substandard. They drive four hours one way to Albuquerque for a simple doctors appointment which is often canceled. Our VA hospital is dirty it is understaffed, it is running on maximum overload. The prescription medicines are ten years behind standard medical care we have seven hundred claims stacked up at the VA office in Albuquerque some of them are ten and seven years old waiting to be processed in the mean time these people are homeless. My son is an officer in the Air Force, and I am a vet and I was raised in a military family. I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical and our vets can’t even get to a doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t reenact the draft I don’t think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.

MCCAIN: Ma’am let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for your support of all of our veterans.

Oh man, please let it be that he just wasn't listening to the question! If not we're all screwed if he wins. We'll all be off to Kabul, Baghdad, Tehran, or even Moscow if McCain aka McWar is elected. :(

Mandatory 2 year service would probably be good for this country. Enforce some discipline that most parents these days seem to lack.

Won’t happen, of course. No politician is going to commit suicide and support this.

And really, even if taken literally, McCain doesn’t support the draft, he simply agrees that the draft will be needed to get Bin Laden.

The idea that we should have mandatory two year service so that we can enforce discipline in young adults is ridiculous. Just because you think you need help becoming disciplined doesn’t mean that the rest of us do.

I’m guessing you don’t support McCain?

Saying that he doesn’t want to get Bin Laden is a bit ridiculous… (Reread what you wrote. ;))

Actually Mr. Payne said that McCain does not support the draft, but realizes it may be the only way to get Bin Laden. This is a situation of harms and benefits, getting Bin Laden is seen as a benefit that can be accomplished through a harm (the draft), McCain feels the harm outweighs the benefit and so does not support the draft.

Dbate:

I know what he meant to say. But he insinuated that McCain does not want to capture Bin Laden because he’s not willing to do what it will take.

Anyway, I’m just messing with him hence the smilie.

Do you understand the definition of “most”?

So you’re in favor of a draft as long as it’s inherently unfair?

If only kids with poor upbringings were drafted, we’d be drafting mainly poor people. That doesn’t sound like a great plan to me. Then again that’s how the Vietnam draft pretty much worked.

I think you misunderstood. I think a 2 year duty of mandatory service (doesn’t necessarily have to be military) would be good for most males in our society. However, I don’t think all need this to become productive members of our society. Of course, taking 125+ IQ people and making them do 2 year stints of manual labor doesn’t really benefit our society. They should be getting trained for higher value occupations.

Un-PC fact of the day: People with poor upbringings tend to be the ones that need the most discipline.

That is insane. The only countries with such mandatory military service are countries like Israel and South Korea that have hostile nation(s) on their very borders. If you think the United States are in a comparable situation, then you’re absolutely paranoid.

Why don’t you get a cane and a lawn chair and yell at kids that get to close to your flower bed instead ? That should take care of some of your discipline anxiety.

Or like Germany? Or Denmark? Or Finland? Or Austria?

Please. Mandatory military service is common.

Of course, females are automatically more disciplined and need not do mandatory service. Heck, let’s just say it: they’re not even capable of what males are capable of.

kyledavid80:

Haha!

Fine, mandatory 2 years of service for all citizens. Singapore has mandatory service and it doesn’t border many hostile nations. I agree that 2 years of service would probably help a lot of people in this country. Think about all those people dropping out of high school, who never go to college, etc.

Efficient? Yes. Fair? No. How would you feel if someone told you that since you have an IQ of 100( hypothetically), you would have to risk your life?

^ Basing draft status on a test which still does not truly test intelligence is kind of ridiculous

These people should be allowed to choose what they want to do just like everyone else. They should either join the military, join the work force, or go to a vocational school and learn a skill.

I said military service of that sort, by which I meant something as lengthy as a two-year commitment. Those countries have services of only a few months, and even have different options for conscientious objectors.

Again, get a lawn chair and raise your cane all you want.

Well, physically that is true.

Women would literally fit very well in the navy and air force where smaller bodies are needed to fit in submarines and fighters. Even tanks can’t accommodate 6’3" 230 lbs. behemoths.

I agree with that statement.
