I’m a transfer student accepted to University of Iowa and University of Kansas. I’m doing my undergrad in communication science and disorders and I’m completely torn. UI is nationally ranked for it’s program and was my first choice for a long time but now that I have to make a decisions I’m second guessing my choice. So I guess I just would like to know more about the atmosphere at UI.
What is the dorm life like?
I’m a Hispanic woman and just want to know if people are friendly or if I might have trouble making friends?
Are the class sizes really big and are professors helpful?
U of Iowa is very very underrated…top notch faculty in sciences, humanities, engineering , etc., a state that takes secondary education very seriously so students are strong , great athletics, Iowa city is one of the best college towns in the US. My. Hispanic daughter goes to a top 13 school, and was bowled over by what she saw at Iowa.
No. She was already at the other school when she saw U of I. And their out-of-state aid isn’t the best, so it might not have been affordable. But it was so much livelier & friendlier than her school, & she’d love to go there for grad school.
I spent a little time at Iowa as a grad student decades ago, and really liked it.
I have no personal knowledge of U of Kansas, but I have heard plenty of good things anout it.
People from the coasts often dismiss the whole Midwest; heck, even people from the Great Lakes part of the Midwest (Mich,Ohio, IL, IN, Wisc, Minn) even often dismiss the prairie states (Dakotas, Neb, Iowa, Kan, Mo…). But there are some excellent universities there, often inexpensive compared to schools in more glamorous regions.
