Hey guys and girls,
I'd like to first start by saying that my brother got into both of these schools with the intention of going into premed, and he is having a difficult time in choosing which one to attend. He points out that UIC students have a better chance of getting into UIC's medical school, but the only problem is that he has a small chance of getting into the upper end medical schools (i.e. Stanford, Northwestern, UPenn...he has high ambitions and will do his best to get in). The only problem with UIC is that it is, according to him, a tier three school and lacks the "prestige" that can give him the edge when it comes down to medical schools. He argues that UIUC has better science programs and has much more prestige, but they are not exactly known for premed, and that is why he is struggling in choosing which school to attend. As a side note, can he even get into such medical schools (Northwestern, University of Chicago, etc) if he does choose UIUC over UIC, as in do premed students at UIUC have a good shot at such schools?

As a student going to UIUC next year and living in the Chicago area, hopefully I can help with this.

This is a hard decision to make since UIC is known for being a pre-med school while at UIUC it is somewhat overshadowed by engineering and business. Personally, I would say the academics are equal. Even so, UIUC might be a good school for him because there are more organizations for pre-med students and he also may be happier which would lead to better studies.

As for saying which school will get him in where is also hard to say. UIUC is known more nationally, but perhaps your brother would have had better research opportunities at UIC, which helps out a lot.

Statistically UIUC does well in getting students admitted.

Going to a top name med school is not important unless academic medicine is the goal, and it is not something that a high school student should even have on his radar.

all US MD schools are excellent and any student should be thrilled to go to any of them.

The top med schools are not going to be impressed by UIUC. at all.

what are your brother’s stats?
