UIUC accounting or UMICH economics program?

I am accepted to both. Which one will have better job opportunities/ career outlook for me?

Thank you

Do you enjoy working as an accountant?

Idrk cuz i’v only taken financial and managerial accounting. I’m looking to get my mba sometime in the future but i’m worried that getting an econ major at ann arbor won’t land me a good starting job that will help me during the mba admissions process.

bump

bump

No doubt about it, a bachelor’s in accounting will have more job opportunities. So yeah, while UMich looks nicer, it doesn’t offer accounting for undergrad… LSA Econ has, unfortunately, a stigma as a place for Ross rejects…

I almost want to say, though, pick the major you’d enjoy more if you’re getting an MBA relatively soon after graduation. Your GPA will probably be better for applications and you’ll enjoy the next four years more too.

“No doubt about it, a bachelor’s in accounting will have more job opportunities.”

Only if the OP wants to work as an accountant. If the OP is looking for a management-track program at a Fortune 500 company, or for a job in the financial/consulting services industry, UIUC Accounting will not be as good as a degree in Econ from Michigan. Also, a degree in Economics is more versatile when it comes to graduate school options, particularly top MBA programs and Law schools.

“LSA Econ has, unfortunately, a stigma as a place for Ross rejects…”

Not really. While many Econ majors did in fact get rejected by Ross, it is fairly known in the workplace that the Economics department at Michigan is one of the best in the nation and attracts many students based on that fact alone. Not all students are made to study business.

I do intend on getting an Mba. This is partially the reason why I’ve asked this question numerous times on this forum. Based on what I’ve read, the first job is integral to your chances of making it into a top mba program. If this is the case, UIUC accounting seems more attractive since accounting apparently places very well into the big four ( as opposed to LSA that has a poor career services reputation). I’ve also heard that accounting majors can get jobs that econ majors can do while econ majors cannot get jobs requiring accounting. Although I would prefer to attend Umich, I’m worried about what my future will look like come graduation time. Thanks for the replies.

Unless you are interested in working as an accountant, a degree is accountancy is probably not the most effective way to prepare for a business career. Accounting prepares you for a career in assurance and advisory, tax, and/or managerial. Which track are you interested in?

The Big 4 is a good starting place for people interested in a career in accounting; it’s probably not a place to pad your portfolio for your MBA application. You start as an associate and part of the working bees; you can look forward to long working hours; in 2-3 years you get promoted to senior and even longer working hours… You need 150 credits to sit for the CPA, which might mean another year in school; without a CPA you don’t get promoted…

Why compare UIUC accountancy to Michigan Econ … unless you are interested in Econ? You can apply to Ross after your freshman year.

Btw, while UIUC grads place very well at the Big 4, it’s not that hard to get a job there if you do well in most accredited b-school. For example, PwC in San Francisco hires many grads from Golden Gate University every year.

Thank you for the response. I should have elaborated further on my current situation. I’m not an incoming freshman for fall 2014 but rather a transfer student from an illinois community college. Money is not an issue so I am free to choose between these two schools. If I go to michigan, I’m stuck with econ with no possibility at ross ( I do like econ). At illinois I have the option to dbl major acct and finance or possibly even complete the bs/ms accountancy program they offer that allows you to take the cpa right out of college. I’ve always wanted to attend AA but due to the threads I’ve read regarding the weak career center, I’ve started to feel that Illinois might be better to kick start my career in business. Does AA LSA really have that weak of a career center? I’m not looking to immediately make huge money by joining an IB straight out of college and would rather prefer to make 40-50k at a mid tier firm for a few years and get an MBA at a top school to further my career paths.

While I’m sure LSA Econ is good…it’s kind of known as the major for people that didn’t get into Ross. If you wanted to go to Ross (#2 in the country), there are accounting classes and people get accounting jobs.

bump

last bump. Is the career center at ann arbor good for econ majors? Really no interest in ross. If anything, I’ll double in math+econ or accounting in IL.

The UIUC accounting degree will almost certainly have a better starting salary, if that’s the only concern.
