Hello everyone, this is my first post in college confidential.
I want to ask, which one is better for architecture? UIUC or University of Washington Seattle?

I’m currently studying architecture at UIUC so I can’t say much about UW.

Both schools are 4 year programs, but UIUC gives you a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies, while UW gives you a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies. I’m not exactly sure what the difference between the two is, but they should be equivalent.

In terms of which one “better” than the other, it’s hard to tell. At UIUC you start studio sophomore year and you have one each semester. At UW you don’t start until your junior year, but you have to apply again to get into the architecture school. That may or may not be advantageous. I know a lot of kids who dropped out of architecture once studio started.

One thing that really attracted me to UIUC was their junior year study abroad program. It’s for a maximum of 48 students who spend a year in Versailles, France studying. You take all the classes your classmates back in the states take, but only you’re in France and you get to travel all around Europe. I don’t think any other school can rival the study abroad program for architecture here.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. I’d be more than happy to answer them. I remember being back in your situation a couple years ago too, haha.

Thank you so much for the information. I think it will really help me make a decision. How about getting a job? I heard that a few firms will visit Illinois and offer jobs.

I am in the same dilemma, except I will major in CompSci. I am aware that UIUC has an exceptional CS department, but UW has a great location.

Which one should I choose?

The market for architects is HORRIBLE. Many skilled pros were fired in the last 3 years due to the recession. Hard to say what 4 years will mean.

Sorry for the late reply, I don’t really go on CC that often.

Huangww: In terms of jobs, every year our school as a Career Fair. Most upper-class men go and some sophomores and a few freshmen go. I heard that there used to be a lot more firms that went, but like barrons said, the market right now is pretty bad, so there a fewer firms than before. Though I also hear that many will keep your information and contact you once the market is better. Hopefully in four years everything will be alright.

OMGMIT: CS at UIUC is one of the top in the nation. It’s also in the College of Engineering which has it’s one little quad which is probably the best quads of the three that we have. Most of the buildings are also pretty new. In terms of ranking, if you care about them, according to the U.S. news UIUC’s undergraduate engineering is 6th and CS is tied for 3rd in the nation. I can’t tell you anything about UW though. Sorry!

UW also has a great CS department in a new top of the line building courtesy of Paul Allen (who went to WSU).
