uwGPA2.9? Is it a typo?

No. The UW from this semester has been factored in.

That uwGPA may hurt unless your school has a very stringent grading system. What is your class rank?

Our school doesn’t do CR. It’s not too stringent, persay.

In general, a low GPA but a great ACT score may suggest the student really lay back at school. This may give a negative impression to the admission office that the student probably did not do homework or pay attention at school but just prepared heavily for the standardized test. If it is due to the high school grading system, then it is a different story. Unfortunately, UIUC does not want recommendation letter or school report. So I don’t really know how can you overcome that low GPA. For UIUC engineering, the admission average GPA is around 3.9. Mid 50 ACT varies with majors but around 31-34.

@billcsho‌ I understand. I might get put into the undecided category. But can’t I explain my situation in another section? There is one like that to my understanding? And isn’t there a chance of me standing at all? I have finsihed BC and taken an total of 7 AP classes…I mean, will that be taken into consideration?

Everything will be considered. What is the reason for the low GPA? Is it because you are taking too many challenging courses? Usually, the GC recommendation may help in this situation but not for UIUC.
From the UIUC application last year, there are two places you may address this yourself. One is under “Academic Challenges”. The 2 questions under this section would be the most appropriate place to explain your low GPA. The other one would be the second essay talking about your experience. This would be an indirect way to mention that.

It’s not only because my classes were hard, my personal life has taken a toll due to an immediate family member.
