**General Comments: CS in COE was really tough this year. EE is not bad though. **

Twin sons accepted - OOS

Son #1 - ACT 32C, 3.966 GPA u/w (school doesn’t weight), Nat’l Merit Commended
Son #2 - ACT 31C, 3.867 GPA u/w

Both boys admitted to LAS. Son #1 - Physics, Son #2 - CS + Anthropology. Both James Scholars.

Both accepted at Iowa State University (extremely safe school for them). One son has been accepted at UT-Austin and we are waiting to hear on other son.

@diyAuror: your SAT scores and GPA are pretty weak compared to accepted kids - just kidding. Well, there is a price to be paid for being Asian and you are paying through your nose. Try to create facebook or google in few months and then apply again.

**Decision: Accepted **

[ b]Reflection**
[ list]
[] Strengths: Wide range of ECs with a consistent theme of design and sustainability, HL physics & art, GPA
[
] Weaknesses: No SAT II, no HL Math, barely any sports and no music, no specific experience in industrial design (switched major last minute), basically wrote my application overnight
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think just a holistic profile with a demonstrated interest in design, relatively unusual goal of using design to confront humanitarian and environmental issues, made my essay sound altruistic overall
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Still waiting on a lot
[/list]

[ b]General Comments: **
I think aside from good grades, make sure to focus on achieving unique EC’s that are personally significant to you and letting that come through in your essays, then you’re mostly set

Essay: I wrote my essay in 45 minutes right before the application was due and was one minute from missing the deadline (turned in app at 11:59). I don’t think essays play as big of a role here as in other colleges. That being said, it was pretty easy for me to write the essay because I have a pretty set and good reason for why I chose Chemical Engineering.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): [Don’t remember sending for UIUC]
APUSH Teacher: Heads a few of the clubs I held positions in; known to write generic recs, but told me he would take the time to write one for me. The vibe I got later though was that he wrote me a generic one
AP Bio teacher: 10th grade, but he loved me. I think he wrote well, but never saw
Counselor Rec: Said she only wrote a few lines here and there
Additional Rec: PI from research, he should have written a good one
