Hi! I’ll be applying to UIUC this year. Is it at all possible for an international to get through 4 years with a total budget of $80000? Please do include work-study options, etc. as well. Also, what are the prospects of financial aid?
The CoA is a bit over $50k per year and they fix your tuition rate for 4 years. Don’t dream on getting financial aid from them. Even top students from OOS with near perfect scores and GPA 4.0 got almost nothing other than federal loan that you are not eligible to. International students are not eligible to work study either.
Aren’t international students allowed to work for 20 hours a week and the whole summer (after the first year)?
Remember also that the state of Illinois has not had a budget for two years, and it’s about to be a third. There are absolutely no guarantees for anything that requires state funding in Illinois.
I doubt it. We live in Illinois and my daughter had no chance of getting through UIUC in business (same tuition as engineering) for $80,000. I wouldn’t count on any financial aid from UIUC - the state is a mess.
You wont’ get a dime from UIUC.
You won’t qualify for work study.
As for getting a job. Your options would be so limited that you can’t count on that. Employers prefer citizens, particularly for eng’g work.
Being “allowed” to work means NOTHING if no one will hire you.
Find a place where your $20k per year plus merit would cover your costs. Again, you won’t get a dime from UIUC. They can’t help their instate students…they’re certainly not going to help an int’l.
What are your test scores?
Does that $20k per year include health insurance and int’l travel???
The only kind of works allowed are either low pay job on campus, or practical training related to your major for a time limit. The former is hard to find and has very low pay. The latter one is very hard to find also. In any case, you would not even get an F-1 visa if you cannot show your full financial support and future earned income does not count.
1520 SAT, 800 SAT Math II, 800 SAT Physics
I think you need to make a new thread since this is now in UIUC forum and UIUC will not be affordable.
In the new thread, include your eng’g goal, your int’l status, your stats, and the amount your family can pay each year (and subtract at least $5k because those funds will be used for int’l travel AND to buy health insurance here.)
Your scores are good but you still will not get a merit scholarship from UIUC. My D actually got even higher stat than you and got nothing from them from OOS. Nevertheless, you may be able to get merit aids from other schools.
I don’t think UIUC even gives merit to int’ls.
Thanks for the help guys… Is there any kind of work-study that I can do. Also, how much can I earn while working summers?
See #7 above. If you find any, it would be around minimal wage. You should not even factor unknown income in your calculation as you are very likely not even finding a job that you may be eligible to.
Spend some time on the Illinois website; tuition, fees, and room and board is going to be over $50k for one year alone. An international student also has to prove availability of at least $62K for the school year. An in-state student is looking at over $30K per year, and part-time employment is just one all too small part of the financing picture. There’s no way student employment is going to put a meaningful dent in your costs.
