Hey Guys & thanks in advance for any help.

So here is my problem - I got accepted into UIUC but for an alternate major. I had applied for Computer Engineering but instead got into Undeclared major at Division of General Studies. However, my major concern is whether I will be able to transfer into UIUC College of Engineering for Computer Engineering. The website states that Computer Engineering has a minimum gpa requirement of around 3.5. Others like Computer Science & aerospace have somewhere around 3.8. I intend to work hard academically for my undergrad & although I am not familiar with how education is at the US (I am from India), I intend to give it my all. I am studying the IB & expect to get around 40/45 (although I got a predicted of around 36) & so I am confident that I can maintain a good gpa. But do I have any guarantees of getting in, & also what if my transfer application gets rejected. Also, I have also been admitted to Pennstate & UC Davis for computer engineering & was wondering if these would be better then the undeclared major at UIUC. I personally prefer UIUC but only if its worth the risk.

If you applied engineering at UIUC and were given DGS, that means you were actually rejected by the engineering college. It is possible to transfer from DGS to engineering but there are no guarantees. The minimum college GPA needed to request a transfer is 3.0 (both in technical courses and overall) and that gets you considered not necessarily in and often higher is needed depending on engineering major (although I don’t know where you got the GPAs you mention). Whether transfer is allowed depends on seats available and the number and grades of those applying for them and thus what is actually needed in GPA can vary from year to year. Also, if you attempt transfer into second year, which is determined before first year ends and before second semester grades are released, your high school grades and tests scores will still be important considerations and the fact that you were rejected by engineering as a freshman will be considered against you. If you attempt transfer into third year, high school record, test scores and intial rejection are not considered. Finally, you should not assume it will be easy to get the GPA needed to get into engineering as a transfer. Bottom line: you have a chance for transfering into engineering but safety would dictate that you accept another college where you have already been admitted to an engineering program.

I really must thank you for giving me such a detailed and intellectual reply to say the least. Truth be told, a part of me already knew that UIUC DGS would not be an ideal choice for me. But the prospect of studying at my top university was more or less making me consider taking the risk. Fortunately for me however, UIUC admitted me into my preferred choice (I am guessing some seats became vacant) in mid april. However, I am sure that your advice will help out others who might come across in the same situation as me and I would also back it up. I was going to put in my deposit at Pennstate had I not been waiting for UMich. Not having that certainty will only pressurize you for the first year or two and you will have to go through unnecessary stress. I would suggest taking a University where you have a confirmed seat over UIUC DGS only unless you really are not sure of your major.

Hey DJ9900, Im in the same position now that you were in last year. I applied for electrical engineering and was admitted to DGS instead. What do you mean you found out you were admitted to your preferred choice in mid-april? Did they switch your decision all of a sudden or did you have to request an appeal, or did something else happen?
