Hi everyone. I am admitted to several schools and now I am struggling between UIUC and Cooper Union. My major in UIUC is CE and in Cooper Union is EE. So here’s the question: which school has better job opportunity after graduation? Like, which one gets better reputation in famous companies? And what is the outcome of most engineering students in these two schools?
Nice choice!
I run an elite EE/CE research group for a large company. Both of these schools are well represented in my group, and I’d say they are in my top 5 from which I recruit (MIT, Cornell, UIUC, Michigan and Cooper). I think UIUC is more widely known among famous companies, but I consider Cooper Union to be my little secret. I’m just blown away by the capabilities that I’ve seen from their BS candidates that I’ve interviewed. In order to get someone from Cooper that I badly wanted recently, I had to match the highest BSEE offer I’d ever seen. My sample size for Cooper is obviously much smaller, and perhaps I’m only dealing with the survivors, but wow these folks learn a lot.
In other words, go with fit (or money). Very different schools and environments.
You’ll get good opportunities at either (if you survive).
Thank you a lot for your response, and btw, is your company in the east coast?
Boston
Traditionally, Cooper engineering has been very prestigious and difficult to gain admission to. I don’t know if it will ultimately shift due to recent tuition changes, but people who make it into (and through) Cooper engineering have historically been some of the best-prepared in the country. For those “in the know,” it’s an outstanding choice.
UIUC is also fantastic for engineering, but especially if you plan to stay in the east, Cooper may provide a unique, top-notch possibility. Congratulations.
We recruit at UIUC too even from the east. How many places do you think there are with great students that we in Boston can attract students from based on the weather, LOL! (Generally the midwest is much colder).
Since I’m not an engineer (but did have friends who attended Cooper years ago), my question wouldn’t be whether UIUC is recruited nationally, but: are Cooper engineers recruited nationally? Truthfully, the ones I knew tended to stay mostly east, but not for lack of skills or intelligence.
More of my friends went to Cooper on the arts side, and there Cooper has an outstanding reputation that travels – but in the main, for those “in the know.”
