UIUC vs GT mechanical engineering, Which one is better?(for outstate student, don't care weather or location)

Neither! Both are great! Visit them!

I know both are great, but I have to choose one.

GT is on some negative lists in Princeton review:
Rank List

5 Professors Get Low Marks

2 Least Accessible Professors

4 Class Discussions Rare

5 Best Athletic Facilities

UIUC:
Rank List

13 Major Frat and Sorority Scene

4 Professors Get Low Marks

I’ve lived in Champaign, visited GT. One is in a large city you can take advantage of. Urbana-Champaign is focused around the university. You would get a more traditional college atmosphere (bubble) there. Plenty to do, but all of it associated with the University. You can go to Chicago by train if you get desperate.

i’d say it depends on what you want to go into. for example, aerospace go gt, but ece or civil go to uiuc. also, you say that location doesn’t matter but it may. gt is in downtown atl, right next to i75, whereas uiuc is in the urbana-champaign area in the middle of nowhere in eastern illinois. neither setting is bad, one just may appeal to some people more than others. i’d look into that. if it were me, i’d choose uiuc. it’s about 4 hrs away for me than the 8 for gt, i like the smaller town atmosphere with big10 sports

That is an ignorant statement, einstein10.

Just because GT is ranked 2 as opposed to 6 in aero and UIUC is ranked 1 (or 2, it switches off and on) and GT is a tad lower does not mean one is the superior choice. it is all about fit at that point, not prestige.

tonyecc, these are questions that you really need to explore on your own by visiting both places and doing your own research. No one can tell you where to go. Academically, you cannot go wrong with either one, but it is still a big decision and you need to check it out for yourself.

sorry bigshot, obviously both are well-respected, but different specializations get more attention from employers their senior year depending on where they go, so yeah it kind of does matter. microsoft interviews and hires more people from illinois than purdue even though they are both top ten, and nasa interviews and hires more people from purdue even though both programs are what do you know, in the top ten again. wow isn’t that wild. yeah i’m ignorant

UIUC is by far a better school.

I never said you were ignorant, I said the statement was ignorant. The companies that recruit from Illinois are almost identical to the companies that recruit from Georgia Tech in aerospace. Both are HUGE name aerospace schools. There is absolutely no advantage to going to one over the other. It is entirely a matter of preference.

well, your in a nice position if you get to pick between those two. to be honest, i would really go off which place you think you would like better. if you can’t do that for some reason then the only other thing u have to base it off is ratings.

That is not a good way to pick schools, though. It is such a subjective system. Once you get into the top 10 or so you really need to look at other criteria as the major deciding factors.

First off, what you get from CC are people’s opinions. So you need to look a little bit into the background of the people giving you their opinions. So, I’d say take Bonehead’s advice. He’s a MechE graduate of Illinois, and is, I believe, currently obtaining a Masters in Aero. Einstein, on the other hand, again, I believe, is yet to take a college engineering course, or any other college course for that matter. So, although Einstein is entitled to his opinion, I fail to see that he has anywhere near the experience that Bonehead has in support of that opinion.

I am a Jr, looking at both. All I gotta say is - you gotta visit them. The differences at this point (both amazing schools for engineering) is so minuscule that you need to go and see which one you feel best at. GT might be a slightly better school, but if you get “that vibe” as you walk around UIUC, go to UIUC.

“you gotta visit them” Many people said “visit them”, I just wonder what can I get if I vistit them one day, two day? Just look around the campus? To see which campus I love?

I am from NYC, a huge city, but I don’t care the school is in large city or colloge town, may be college town is better for me.
UIUC’s expense is 5K-7K more than GT’s ? Expense is 30% proportion of my consideration; school prestige and best value 40% ; campus life 30%.

boneh3ad, you are a college student?

I am a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M (Aerospace) who did my undergrad at UIUC (Mechanical).

My guess would be that either an overnight stay at both (I know GT has overnight “Connect With Tech” sessions, you could probably find a similar program @ UIUC b/c it’s also such a big school). I’m sure a day tour would be good enough, but if you could do overnights, that’d give you a good idea…and hey, if you are miserable, you stick it out the rest of Freshman year and transfer.

You can’t really make a “wrong choice” when deciding upon colleges. There’s no way you can know after a visit which school you would thrive at more. It would take a month of going to each to get a better idea.

:(
If a choice is made between UIUC and GT, is there any possibility that’s a ‘wrong choice’?
It seems I have to visit both of them.

Academically, there is no wrong choice. Personally, there may be. That is why you need to visit them both if at all possible.
