UK International Applicant - Finance/Business focus bad for my application?

All my EC's are Finance/Business related, so I lack the wide range of activities US (I heard) are looking for. I have a bit of voluntary work and that is about it.

Will universities such as:

University of California
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
UPen Wharton

See my EC's as bad or like the concentration and achievements in the finance/business area (e.g. funding by an investor for my social network)?

Give us your grades or O & A Level results, your SATs Academic standings and a more detailed description of your achievements ECs etc -the reason is I find your post a bit too vague

Don’t worry about wide array of ECs …its depth that counts i.e. how long you are involved and whether you are passionate or not

BTW Harvard Yale and Princeton don’t have any business majors in undergrad

@DarthSpawnus 5A*, 5A GCSE.

Currently taking my A-Levels.

A (Maths, Economics, History) in my AS Level
Expecting A* Economics and A in the other two subjects for A-Levels at best.

I still need to take my SATS.

Thanks for your post, I was just wandering though would a focus in those EC’s kill any chances I have in the US right away? I have been concentrating on them in the last two years. Just about to recieve funding from a private investor for a social network idea (mid - high xx,xxx) and becoming president of a starting up hedge fund with low (xxx, xxx) funds in client money.

Also all my university fees are sponsored by a private investor.

Thats good then

Do you need financial aid?

@DarthSpawnus No mate, I said all my fees are being paid for?

Do I stand a good chance if my SATS are good for places like Harvard and Wharton or am I dreaming due to the lack of quantity EC’s?

they like targeted ECs - if you really have a significant business startup (and can discuss it at length) you should have a decent shot at admission. As to tuition, even if you think you won’t need it, apply anyway at Harvard and Yale as they are need-blind and your sponsor may not fully understand that American universities without financial aid run ~$60,000 per year for internationals, all in.

Thanks for the reply.

Will applying for financial aid make my chances worse?

I am also worried about the UK A-Levels, should they all not be

AAA*

For a university of say Harvard’s level?

Anyone please???

As to financial aid, no, it will not hurt your chances when applying to harvard, yale or princeton - they are “need blind” for internationals, which means that they do not consider your financial need when they make admissions decisions.

For grades, so long as your SAT 1 and 2 scores are sufficiently high, you should stand a chance. American universities are different from British ones in that academics mean relatively less for admissions - they prefer to look at the whole person, so while your grades need to be top ~1% to be competitive, you don’t need perfect A*****.

Also, quantity of ECs is, if anything, disliked by American universities. They far prefer depth of involvement.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Will appreciate other members views as well.

If you don’t have aid problems then there are other business schools like NYU Stern and Michigan Ross that are very good for undergrad business. Remember HYP doesn’t have business in undergraduate level.
