UM-Ann Arbor Chance?

Hi everyone. Michigan (LSA) is my first choice, but I’m not confident that I’ll get in because my GPA is lacking. I go to a very competitive public school (not in Michigan) and have a weighted GPA of 91.5714/100. My school does not report unweighted GPAs. I should also add that honors/AP classes are worth five extra points, whereas in some schools, APs are worth 10. I took multiple honors classes and one AP class during my junior year. As a senior, I’m taking AP literature & composition, AP government & politics, AP environmental science, AP Spanish VI, and calculus. I took three AP tests last year but I didn’t do well so I’m not going to report my scores. I took the old SAT and got a composite score of 2140 (640 CR, 730 writing, 770 math). I’m registered to take the ACT on October 22nd but UMich won’t receive my score unless I apply regular decision, which I’m not planning on doing. I also just took subject tests in biology (E) and math II, and although I don’t know what I got yet, I’m most likely not going to submit my scores because I don’t feel too confident about them. I believe I have very impressive ECs but I’m not sure if they’ll help much. I became an EMT two years ago and have since racked up over 800 community service hours. I was also recently elected to be the “Senior Cadet Leader”, meaning I’m in charge of all of the other EMTs that are in high school. I’m in NHS and was given an award for having the most community service hours out of all of my peers. I spent a day shadowing a plastic surgeon, and have spent some time co-instructing my old EMT class, in which I earned the highest grade. Aside from EMT, I’m also a soccer player. During my freshman year, I was captain of the JV soccer team. Sophomore year, I was named “Most Improved” on my Varsity team (embarrassing, right?). Junior and senior year, I was a Varsity starter. I also played for a club team that won two state championships, one of which was hosted by a national soccer league (USYS National Championship Series State Cup Championship). I’ve also been a Varsity track & field athlete since freshman year. I can’t really think of anything else to add. I also wasn’t sure how I was supposed to format this, so if you’re still reading, sorry that you had to read through an unorganized wall of text. I really, really want to get in but my GPA and my school’s competitive nature are not making things easy. What are your thoughts?

Let’s assume that the Boston University can be more or less equal to Ann Arbor, I got a 32 ACT and 3.4 GPA and I got in. I wouldn’t fret…

I forgot to mention that my dad went to the business school @ UMich, if that makes any difference.

well does your dad have any contacts with the people in UMich?

no, unfortunately.

then it’s not gonna help u

Also how does your school’s GPA work? I don’t really understand what 91.5714/100 means…

Instead of a 4.0 scale, my school uses a 100.0 scale. At my school, a 3.5 equates to a 90, so I have around a 3.65. It was estimated that I’d have around a 3.75 but I took a math class for one semester that fucked my GPA up. I switched into an easier class after the first semester but it made a mark in my GPA.

technically, it’s a 3.657

Summary:
SAT is hella fine
GPA is a bit low (assuming that it is UW)

Overall:
I think you can make it.

Thank you! Crossing my fingers.

Your Dad is a legacy and that will help you slightly. Make sure you write awesome essays and apply EA. Michigan will use your updated SAT scores if they defer you to RD. Let the admissions office know that you have re-taken the SAT ; they will use your previous SAT scores during EA but it may make it more likely that they will defer you. When my son applied last year, only the tip-top of applicants were accepted during EA, most were deferred and accepted Jan/Feb.
