UM College Life

Can we get some more college life questions on here.

I'm a 1st year student here at UM, and I want to help all you young CC'ers as much as I can...but I can't do much w/ the application since its been a LONG time.

BUT...questions on academic/college life I LOVE responding to...so come on high schoolers, cough 'em up!!!!!!!!

KB

sure, how about teh general social scene?...im not a fan of hard drinking or partying but a lil fun can never hurt ;)
Also, this may sound like a shallow question but how is the dating scene?

how much do you think an average U of M freshman spends on studying/classwork out side of class per day? can you give me an idea of the workload?

you know...I'm right next to central and I must say, after 10'o clock, Ann Arbor seems pretty dead. Maybe I'm wrong cause the dorms are all fun and exciting and wild. But theres not many people walking around campus lol...the libraries however are always busy

umaradarr where are you walking because i live on central campus and its crazy busy on Thursday thru Saturday nights! The diag ALWAYS has groups of people hanging around it....have you ever gone to South U after 10 PM its crazy?

nsdances (I don't like this. I'm so used to calling you by your real name!),

Umar lives in that really tall apartment building right around the corner from our dorm so he's usually around our area. (Sorry Umar... I couldn't resist answering this question even though it was intended for you. She lives literally across the hall from me.) However, I don't know where he's at at night though. Umar???

LOL hahaha...Yes I agree Thurs-Saturday is the busy times. Sorry, I was talking about the area around where I live, which is yes, the really tall building next to Betsy Barbour and amongst the restaurants, michigan bookstore, etc....theres like barely anyone around there after 10:30 or so, Mon-Wed atleast, haha. Yea the Diag is busy as usual....

maybe I was too general is saying where I thought was dead lol.

NSDances, I know what your talking about SORRY ALRIGHT lol...I'm barely over there though cause I never hang out with anyone over there...well that is another story, when I have the TIME to hang out is more appropriate

I need to spend one night and do nothing with some people I know. My life is too busy with homework/school and home life though. Someone call me damnit and force me to do something!l lol

Theres always time to make things for the people that you want to see and the things that you want to do, but only if you are able to create the time. College is NOT all about the academics people, its the social experiences, living on your own, meeting TONS of new people etc etc etc that make college COLLEGE...home life becomes secondary to college life well atleast in my opinion. your our of HS hometown, life is different its a change but mommy and daddy no longer make decisions for us (well they shouldnt be univinolved or overinvolved) but anyway no more ranting back to homework because its sunday and homework day.

could someone please answer my question as well as JudasDevotion's?

social scene here is amazing... especially on home football weekends. oh, and in case you were wondering, free alcohol at all U-M parties (frat and house). one of the few schools in the country with this tradition

There is both random hookups and dating here @ michigan...it just depends on what you are looking for and where you are meeting the person that you want to date.

The workload is tough...most of the reading is for the next week (I'm a history major and Bio minor) I would say assume to do homework ALL day sunday and like 2-3 hours a night on weekdays.

What the hell are you talking about nsdances...my home life sure as hell doesn't come up 2nd place after college life. College is awesome I agree and it's sweet being on your own and doing your own things, and of course your parents don't make all decisions for you anymore, but hell they are still important and I'm sorry if I want to see them once in a while, unlike other people who hate their families for some douchebag of a reason.

and btw, the reason I'm busy all the time is cause I'm a freakin premed alright. I'm sorry I have so much **** to do (research, classes, hw/studying, group meetings, events) not to mention I'm fasting this month too which makes stuff harder, AHHHH!!!

I'm not saying as if "oh I'm important and you guys all suck, and I'm sure there are other premeds who do random **** all day, I'm just tellin ya where I'm from and what I'm doing....

I'm not angry anymore, BREATHE UMAR BREATHE!, lol

wow.........

Just a comment on the social life...I think everyone's experience is a little different. people drink a lot in the dorms and not to be sexist but it's mostly guys who have power hours and keep beer stocked in their fridges(at least in south quad). But yeah, thursday through saturday there'a lot of frat/house parties. basically everyone drinks but it's really ok if you don't because i have gone to plenty of parties already and people are really cool w the fact that i don't drink. but to be honest, frat parties get lame because they're really hyped up but it's basically a bunch of drunk guys and girls w slutty outfits trying to hook up w eachother...but im biased.
as far as wrokload, it depends on classes completely. history/antrhopology/poli sci/english classes are heavy on reading but the papers aren;t bad. when i say heavy i mean like 60 pages a night(again, this is flexible)
math depends on the level but the beginning calc classes have like 40 problems a week of homeowrk plus quizzes every two weeks.
im not in science but i've heard that they're all pretty much insane. especially orgo. dont ask me to give detail on insane but my friends are always btiching about orgo so it must suck, lol.
ok that was my completely affected view of honors life as a freshman. Go blue!!!MSU sucks(sorry i needed to trhow that out there)

I didnt mean to start a HUGE debate over the variety of college life at Michigan....but bethmarie is right it is different for everyone.

the social scene sounds cool, but i was wondering - is there any diversity there? as in people from other countries/a lot of asians, etc. or is it mostly white people? just wondering, thanks!

i find that there's ton of diversity. My town was like 95% white so it's really cool that there's so many people from different backgrounds. You can look at the umich website for actual stats but i think there's something like 15-20% Asian people and there's a lot of other minorities too.

yes, plenty of diversity. Of course there's still plenty of whites, but if you're a minority, no need to worry to find people of your own background
