UMaine accepted chance for honors college and merit

My daughter got her Honors program invitation letter a few days ago as well. The program sounds wonderful, but I don’t have any previous experience to share, so I would also love to hear from folks who do. Because of the Honors program and a presidential scholarship (we are out of state), U Maine is at the top of the list for her!

Did they email the invite or mail it? My son hasn’t received an invite yet but he has similar stats as my daughter and she was invited in 2020.

We got a letter in the mail.

I do remember from our visit last fall that they said even if you do not receive an invitation, you can request to be considered for the honors program. But it could be it just hasn’t arrived yet. We are in NH and received it Saturday I think.

In addition to an honors invitation, yesterday DS received an invitation to the Coastal Year at UMAINE Machias. Certainly seems like this is not compatible with honors…

Anyone familiar with this?

We got the same letter. I was assuming they offered it to anyone in those qualifying majors (D23 is Marine Bio). It looks like it tries to offer more experiential and hands-on learning.

Also Marine Bio. We’ll have to learn more about it.

I’m hoping someone who has visited could make a suggestion regarding a hotel. I’m considering the Country Inn at the Mall because it seems to have good ratings, is a reasonable price, and offers breakfast. Any thoughts?

@OceanAir ?

We were just there the weekend before last and stayed at Country Inn at the Mall. Nothing fancy, not upgraded or rehabbed, but CLEAN and a decent enough breakfast. Be sure to tell them you are visiting UMaine and they will knock off 10% from your price! The front desk folks/breakfast person/housekeepers were all super friendly and kind. Have fun!

Thanks for your reply. I saw on their website that the breakfast is “individually wrapped items” and my H is objecting. I might give them a call. Lol.

Eh, there are hardboiled eggs, cereal, classic waffle machine set up, etc. It’s not offensive but nothing wow. And the hotel is in the middle of a whole lot of chain restaurants and fast food joints, so you always have those options if desperate. Have fun!

Well, thank you!!! I just made a reservation and got an amazing rate. We saved enough money that we can get H another breakfast if necessary!

Hello! I just tuned in — you made a great choice!

We also like the Hampton Inn in Bangor- new/clean, etc.

For future reference- if needed - The Black Bear Inn in Orono- it’s “OK” if you are traveling with a pet. Best deal around for the only an extra $10 to bring Fido- and you can request the room with wood floors.
The staff is lovely but the place is pretty old & icky… not recommended.

You didn’t ask … but I have dining suggestions- :star_struck:

Breakfast/Brunch-
Try Nest -it’s excellent- cute locations in both Orono & Bangor.

Dinner-
11 Central - fun & happenin’ place
Novios -fun tasting menu - pricey but good
OHOP in Orono is a landmark worth trying
*Timber gets great reviews but we tried it twice and both times very disappointed- not worth the hype in our opinion!

We’ve been up there a few times. Finally have our bearings! Going next weekend for a visit and found a great Airbnb in Bangor.

That is great info about the Black Bear Inn. We have dogs and I was thinking how nice it would be to take them on a hike in Maine with us…though maybe not in our first trip.

Plus, sometimes it can be hard to arrange coverage for our dogs and it might be nice to have the option to take them along. See how I’m assuming D23 will be attending UMaine. Lol.

Weather is looking pretty good next weekend! Saturday is cold but sunny and Sunday and Monday are relatively warm.

Yes it’s looking good for the weekend! Hope your tour goes well & you have good weather! :+1:

Just checking in on this thread. DS23 was accepted to Honors College with a Presidential/Flagship scholarship bringing cost down to our state (NH) Tuition.

He is a Marine Bio there (and at UCONN where he was accepted with regional tuition discount) but a Pre-Vet major at UMASS, UNH and UVM. He’s struggling with what to choose. Orono is pretty sleepy, but I’m sold on UMAINE for Marine Bio (William Ellis rocks), but if he is not sure or he changes his major it seems like one of the other schools (like UMASS or UVM) are stronger institutions in Pre-Vet.

Anyone have any advice or attend the UMAINE Pre-Vet session?

Thanks!!
