UMass Accepted Students Day

Sure wish UMass had done the right thing and postponed today’s Accepted Students Day for early applicants. The library is closed all day and buses are skipping some stops due to snow, but UMass tried to squeeze in a jam-packed open house from early morning until 2 p.m.? Even with the new early end time families still need to drive home – a potential treacherous proposition given the forecast. Disappointing…

We really, really wanted to go but did not want to risk a long drive home in the snow.

I understand the logistics involved in rescheduling. Still, it’s not fair to hold a very important open house for students who are in the midst of deciding where they will attend the next four years on a bad weather day such as this. May I suggest that next year UMass plan a second open house day as a back up (for example, the following weekend) in case the first is cancelled due to inclement weather and notify their presenters and helpers accordingly long before the event.

If any of you out there braved the elements to attend, how was it?

We also stayed home. I’m glad we won’t be driving home in it. There will be other accepted student days.

I went today and it was nothing special. I can understand why it might be beneficial if you hadn’t seen the campus before, but having been there several times myself, I saw close to no benefit. It was mostly all question and answer during the one session I went to (biology). Other than that there were no campus tours happening, because of the blizzard-like conditions and no dorm tours as far as I could tell. Even though I only live half an hour away it took nearly two hours to drive home in the snow. I am sure there will be other accepted student days, because this one was hardly useful.

My husband a daughter attended. We live in NJ and it took a long time to get home in the snow. Despite that, they enjoyed the open house and found it beneficial.

Such a waste of time. Even half of the on campus student representatives did not attend. Should have been canceled.
