So I am the ROTC mom with the April 15 deadline for my son to request a ROTC scholarship transfer – the problem is that in order to request a transfer, you have to actually have a letter of rejection. And my son STILL has NOTHING from UMass Amherst. When I called the admissions office last Thursday, and explained the catch-22 situation that my son is in, the staffer said: “Well, he will just have to make the best of it”. HOW RUDE. I also have our high school principal, our guidance counselor, and some teachers calling in. In addition, I contacted our state representatives who are getting in touch with the Mass. Secretary of Education. In the meantime, it turns out the military is not only more responsive than UMass Amherst admissions, they are willing to be flexible on a transfer to one of the other 2 schools where my son has been accepted. We are all still hoping for UMass Amherst but I am dismayed that this is even happening. My older 2 sons went to UMass Amherst without any of this ineptitude. Really sad commentary on our flagship state university.
IMO yes, the UMass Admissions office is disfunctional and rude. We’re lucky in that our child got her decision early. It’s no reflection on any applicant–this is entirely due to disfunction in the admissions office.
The admissions office is separate from the rest of the school so don’t hold it against the school. But they really have a problem and are causing problems for hundreds of families.
Such a popular and good university, you would think they have it figured out by now. I understand they get a lot of applications but so do other schools and they all seem to be able to send out decisions in a timely manner. Just disappointed.
It’s about time we are going to find out! Saturday it is folks! At this point I’m turned off by the school… but that’s on them!
I am an alumni and huge fan of this school. This situation is such a disgrace.
Like so many others, my daughter is in limbo waiting for this decision.
I’m not usually a “talk radio” person, but I listened to the podcast that someone was kind enough to link above and it made me more irate that OOS students were considered and decided on and notified way before in state kids. (which I have also read here). This is just screwed up and wrong.
Has there been any coverage of this in their own newspaper, the Collegian?
@dillon21 I had a 32 ACT. A 94 weighted GPA. 2 sport captain and leadership on the math team, science fair clubs, and NHS. I think placing at the state science fair helped as well. I am also a female in state
My daughter and her boyfriend both applied, we are out of state. He received a decision in January or February. It’s been so long that we honestly assumed she’d be rejected. Today her portal changed to accepted and with a scholarship. It’s so late that we had honestly ruled U Mass out. Now we have to rethink things. They have got to figure out a way to get decisions out sooner, no school should go past April 1st. It’s ridiculous.
My son is OOS and is still waiting for an answer from admissions. His classmates already heard but he is still waiting. He’s borderline at best so I expected a quick rejection, especially since he is applying to Isenberg. At this point I am expecting a WAIT LIST response this weekend while UMA figures out how many people simply “gave up” and moved on with another school which responded to them more timely.
Personally, at this point, I’m hoping he gets accepted simply so we can write a letter to the Dean telling them that we are declining the offer because of the incompetence of the Admissions Office and the perception that the entire University is run in such a poor manner.
I was offered a spot on the waitlist. I am a nursing major. And in their email following the message saying I’m waitlisted, it says…
“Note: For any option above, you will not be admitted to the following competitive majors: Isenberg School of Management, sport management, engineering, nursing, or computer science. There are opportunities to join these programs after enrollment, except nursing”
So just reject me! I can’t be admitted into nursing ever, so grow a pair and send the rejections. I don’t want to go to a school with such poor time management and planning anyway, but come on!

I honestly kind of expected to be waitlisted/rejected at this point, so I’m not surprised.
did you hear from them this late in the night?
I got the email at 7:45 pm CST
I certainly hope everyone will receive their admission decision soon, so you can weigh your options and make a decision. This is how the last decisions slowly trickled in last April, many were wait listed or placed into alternate majors. Deposits are due at most schools May 1st. Last year, seems like quite a few students were able to come off the wait list, but maybe not your 1st choice major, in May or start in January.
Well we got our answer. Both of my sons were rejected. They are going to be sad when I tell them when they wake up. Congrats to all who got in. Best of luck. They will probably choose st Anselm and unh but both expensive and dad wants umass lowell but I don’t like neighborhood.

@ananva I would definitely consider UML. I am from lowell and I know some of the locations aren’t the best but it is a really great school, especially for the price. I am not really considering it only because I am from there and want to go somewhere else. They have really made a lot of great improvements, I see new buildings going up everyday! Just think about it, it’s a great option!
For those that were either wait-listed or rejected, what does your Spire account look like? Where do you see that information? Ours looks the same… We are dying here and it is unfathomable that we are still waiting. If it is bad news, just give it to us so we can make a decision. I am not seeing anyone posting with recent decisions that they were admitted. I personally think it’s extremely cruel and in poor taste to make people wait so long if you are rejecting or wait-listing them anyways. Shame on you Umass!
Check your email, my spire hasnt changed but I was emailed last night about the waitlist.
