UMass- Amherst Class of 2019 Regular Decision

@aquan3123123‌ - #36 According to Bloomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/bschools/rankings#5

You can also change to the less selective Econ program at a later date. (assuming you get in undecided)

@SQBrit- that was for the engineering school. Have no idea whether it was weighted or unweighted.

It has really changed since my day of graduating from HS in the late 70’s and anyone could get in to Zoo Mass!

Do you guys know for OOS kids, what is the aid typically look like? we have to pay around 40K a year (tuition+room and board) and the max my family can afford is 12K…
Do they offer any type of grant/award other than the 8k they provide for OOS kids?

@snoogleki‌ - It depends, I have heard of some people getting larger scholarships, but most seem to be moderate in size, 10k would be certainly towards the top. Additionally, some dorms are cheaper than others and there are other ways to cut costs like becoming an RA. Lastly, OOS students from ME,CT,VT,RI and VT can get reduced tuition as they are New England students and qualify for a discount.

PS- I’m not sure your situation of need but something called a Pell grant is available up to 5.5K and it doesn’t need to be repaid. So crunching the numbers, Umass with New England tuition is 23K - 5.5k Pell grant - 8k grant you got is ~10k per year not including R+B which is 10-11K yearly. So Umass would be perhaps 20K including tuition and board assuming you can get the grant. (Also, I think RAs get cheap to free boarding)

My portal says my application is still under review. Should I be worried because I haven’t gotten any mail yet? [-O<

@TeejayAduma‌ no

He has been accepted as a physics major, Commonwealth Honors College, Chancellor’s Award: $12K/year. @SQBrit what were your son’s sat scores? My son received his acceptance today. His SAT scores were very high, and his GPA was mediocre. Don’t lose hope.

Anyone have any idea if they will be out by the end of the week, because it seems like a vast majority of students on here and in my school ( in-state MA) have gotten decisions and i haven’t gotten anything.
Not complaining but I’m slowly starting to lose hope, and expecting a rejection.

Still waiting for RD here. @BostonSportsFan - A poster at the beginning of this thread indicated that the decisions come out in 4 batches starting last week and going on through early April. If the mailings go out Friday then depending on where you live you may receive word back at the earliest Monday. The Indian posters above were probably decided upon last week but just received the official acceptance in the mail. I do think that those already notified were the “easy admits”. That doesn’t mean you won’t be accepted - just that your application may take more take for review and a decision.

@canigoback - I haven’t lost hope but thanks for the words of encouragement! Actually some reassurances provided by two kind posters (@Greenman57 & @ConfusedMominMA) have me hopeful for acceptance “undeclared”. Also because DS was deferred I’m thinking that he’s gone to the bottom of the pile. It’s funny how everything is working out. UMass Amherst was not our top choice at first but as time has passed it’s looking better and better. For a few different reasons but mainly: 1) I don’t think my son knows what major he wants - so if he is going to experiment/make mistakes, I would rather it was at instate prices and 2) he’s pretty disorganized and depends upon us more than he realises!

@SQBrit My packet says the date: March 10th :smiley:
So it took about 4-5 days to reach me. Considering I live miles away from Massachusetts, that was pretty fast.

Also I wouldn’t consider myself an easy admit :smiley:
I doubted I would get in. My SAT’s suck. Never lose hope guys!! It’s possible they sent out international student letters first. Just a heads up, I’m considered out-of-state because I’m American but studying in a different country. Soooooo yeah.

Best of luck guys!!!

Our son got his letter in the mail yesterday. It was dated March 10. We live in Westchester County NY. @SQBrit‌ it sounds like our sons are similar in some ways, though my son has decided upon physics as his major. He is incredibly intelligent, scored 750 math, 750 cr, 710 writing, on SAT, but his GPA suffered due to time management and organization challenges. In fact, I’ve found an therapist who specializes in executive function issues and we’ve got our first appointment tomorrow. I am hoping she can help him develop some strategies in time for college, wherever he winds up. Good luck. I hope you get an answer soon.
