UMass- Amherst Class of 2019 Regular Decision

Still waiting here too…for my son. We live in Mass.

Accepted to Uconn, Del Val, Florida Southern.

@Sappphire50 - Wow our son’s could be twins, lol! DS has pretty bad time mgmt/ org skills. I swear that his GPA reflects all the homework he didn’t do, or did complete but didn’t hand in, lol. He typically aces the exams - shouldn’t that be enough, he thinks? He’s very strong in math & science and just told me yesterday that he thinks he would love biochem as a major, math as a minor. Have you decided which school to accept?

Glad to hear that mailings were postmarked Tuesday March 10th of last week. That blows my theory that they are only sent out once a week. I still think that the deferred applicants will hear last though.

@SQBrit‌ OMG forgetting to hand in the homework that’s actually been completed drives me crazy!!! I truly believe that kids like ours really can’t help it tho, they appear to be slackers, but it is truly an executive function disorder. I am really hoping this “executive function coach” can help. She even does Skype so if things go well we are going to continue with her when he goes off to school.

@Sapphire50 - glad to see I struck a chord  Well, executive function is certainly delayed in DS but I also think it is a “boy thing”. I hoping he will grow out of it! Also, TBH studying and school work is not his biggest priority. He puts more effort into jazz band/pep band, sports, etc. He’s used to doing well in quizzes/tests (with no studying of course) and let’s face it, homework takes more time and effort.

He prepped for the SATs but did worse with prep than the ACTs he took 2x with no practice. Go figure. The last time he took the ACTs, I asked him on the car ride “did you practice for this”? His reply “no” was actually a relief! Sure enough, he did better the second time.

@sqbrit Ok, now this is getting interesting. My son is also in jazz band!! and he runs (XC and track). He is also much better on testing than homework. I can count on one hand the number of times he has turned in an essay or lab on time. He actually writes beautifully, but it can take him two days to write a paragraph.

@sapphire50 and @SQBrit – OK, get a room! (actually interesting how you can meet folks with similar interests – or kids – on CC!)

I have a question for all of you. Would you guys consider going to UMass Amherst over say, UCI, Purdue or UW Seattle? I have an 8k scholarship to UMass Amherst and i’ll be a major at Computer Science. So yeah. I haven’t been accepted to the other places yet, but its hypothetical
Would you guys go to UMass Amherst over those places?

@sapphire50 and @SQBrit, sounds like my son too lol! SAT’s Math 750, Verbal and Writing 730, 720. Doesn’t do a lot of his homework, leaves the homework he does on his desk or under the bed, performs well on tests, and doesn’t think homework is useful as a learning tool. He is also in jazz band (plays drums), symphonic band. At his school, if you don’t turn it in, you get a zero averaged in to your grade. I’m glad he took honors and ap courses as this also shows he was capable. So do we have triplets? Any chance you can share some of those organizational tips?

forgot to add, my son was accepted premed

@canIgobacl @SQBrit Wow, too funny. If the three of them wind up at UMASS, I’m seeing a jazz trio in their future. My son plays the sax. He also plays guitar and is teaching himself bass guitar. My son has gotten so many zeros on his portal for not-turned in work it makes my head spin. Same for my son re: APs and SUNY-level dual enrollments - his weighted grade is much more impressive than his unweighted, which I’m not even sure of as our school doesn’t even report unweighted. Would happy to share tips (assuming they start working). Will keep you posted.

@sapphire50 Your son got some wonderful scholarships. My son didn’t receive any scholarship from Stonybrook yet. but he was accepted there too. He is still waiting to hear on a couple of schools before we start to compare. Are you considering Stonybrook? RPI is a great school for engineering. Was that also one of his interests? My son was thinking of biomedical engineering as a second choice but he didn’t apply to RPI.

@brucemag lol you are too funny. Actually this is more about how misery lives company and also how exasperating our young men can be. I have 3 sons so I feel I know the subspecies well. If you have daughters, forgive me for saying this but I feel they get the HS game much better than boys. I’m hoping for a different outcome in college!

@canigoback - wow I felt a shiver go up my back. Congratulations we have triplets! Doesn’t think homework is useful sums it up. He knows the material, right? Why should he have to prove it, lol. left on desk, bottom of backpack to be rediscovered on the last day of school. Perfect.

DS plays the baritone horn and trombone so I think we have a jazz band in the making.

Btw those scores are amazing. One very smart kid there.

@SQBrit - I’m surprised I didn’t make my CC ID “My Three Sons” because I too have been blessed (cursed?) with three boys. Middle guy is HS senior heading to Penn State (partly because he hasn’t heard yet from UMass!); youngest is in 10th grade and oldest has been in and out of college and now has a job that will pay for the rest (yay!). Good luck to you, @canigoback and @sapphire and your triplets!

@canigoback I have to be honest, I have been truly stunned by the outcomes for my son so far, in light of his severe time management struggles. He applied to ten schools and was accepted to all of them . There were times, because of his less-than stellar gpa, that I wasn’t even sure he’d get into his safety. So now, in The spirit of be careful what you wish for, we’ve got a lot of decisions to make. I guess since he took many weighted classes, they really took that into consideration as far as rigor. So along with his great scores, and I won’t pretend the fact he is half Cuban (his dad was born in Cuba, I am Jewish) didn’t play a role, diverse interests - running, music, physics - nice recs, great essay and volunteer hours, it all just fell into place. And yes, he’s been offered some incredible scholarships. Full tuition at both Stony Brook and Binghamton and he is leaning toward stony brook because of its superior physics program. We have eliminated Binghamton tho it’s a great state school, just because it’s not as strong in physics, and we need to start eliminating somewhere. Also dropped the other SUNYS - Oneonts, Geneseo and New Paltz. So it’s between Stony Brook, Northeastern, Rochester, RPI, Pitt, and UMASS. RPI had sort of dropped off because we hadn’t visited yet, and the lopsided boy/girl ratio, but they’ve offered $46k/year - again, I’m flabbergasted - so we really feel like it deserves a look. so everyone keeps telling me it’s finally time to stop worrying, but unless you have a kid such as ours, it’s very hard to understand what it’s like. So I still worry about how he’s actually going to pull it off, and I pray he can step up and rise to the occasion.

@sapphire50 RPI is a great school. As far as the boy/ girl ratio goes, I wouldn’t be concerned about that. I went to Skidmore which had a 3 to 1 girl/ boy ratio at the time. I dated RPI and Union guys. It’s about a half hour away from Saratoga Springs. However, I always thought of RPI as a strong engineering school. Are they strong in physics and the rest of the sciences? What are your thoughts on Stonybrook versus U Mass Amherst? I like the fact that they can take classes at Mt Holyoke, Smith, and Amherst.

Did anybody that applied in December hear back yet? I applied December 1st and my Spire page turned to “under review” about a week ago. Extremely anxious to hear back

lol @Yvask95‌, how can you consider UW in your list if you (and I) haven’t even gotten in yet  I got into Purdue as well btw.

@Kai407‌ It’s hypothetical :smiley:
UW is my first choice and if I get in I would without a doubt go there. But, I just wanted to know if anyone would go to UMass Amherst instead of those places

@CanIgoback‌ I actually went to Union for undergrad (it was known for engineering but I was an English major). but for some reason never made it over to RPI. We used to go to Saratoga a lot. I don’t know much about RPI but do believe they are strong in the physical sciences. We wil be visiting later this month. My son likes both Stony Brook and Umass. He likes both of their campuses. He really likes those big spacious campuses, with all that brutalist architecture. They are both definitely contenders. You can’t really beat the price we’d be paying at Stony Brook. But he loved UMASS Too and he got into the honors College. It’s going to be a tough choice. Northeastern, roChester and pitt all still in the mix, too. Lots of road trips over next few weeks.
