I think it’s because it is in state & the cost is so much less. My son was accepted at UNH (our home state school) & received a Dean’s scholarship for $1,500. He was also accepted at UMaine with a Dean’s scholarship & honors …$15,000 scholarship. The out of state tuition for UMaine will be about the same as the instate tuition for UNH when the scholarships are included. We will see what my son gets for UMass Amherst (if anything), but I think the higher scholarships are for out of state kids to bring the cost down to a more manageable level.
My understanding is that in-state kids accepted into the Honors College get a standard $2K per year merit scholarship; while out-of-state kids accepted into the Honors College get $12K per year (and out-of-state kids not accepted into Honors get $8K). Seems like the award for in-state kids could be a bit more generous, maybe $4K-$5K, as it is their own state flagship.
Yeah, it seems that out of state scholarships are higher, but ultimate cost is also still higher. I have also found that out of state scholarships given to MA residents from other state flagships are higher than what their in state residents got, but the ultimate price is still higher than your own state flagship. It’s weird.
You would think these states would want to keep their own residents…

“In addition, UMass Amherst will waive the remaining 67% of in-state tuition so that you will receive a full tuition waiver by enrolling at UMass Amherst”
so for UMA it’s 100% tuition waived.
@redpoodles Do you mean to say that they do not waive the whole $13k?
@ fallenwinter, that is correct. I believe one years’ tuition is just under $2000. In-state students who score in the top 10% of their class on MCAS testing get free tuition and that is the $2000…so many people believe it is much more than that but the rest is made up of fees, etc.
@1stkidcollegedad ~ D was accepted into the CHC with a $2000 merit aid award only as well with very good stats. It is my understanding that that is the top award for in-state students. D has been accepted to 9 colleges so far, not one has offered her less than $20K merit, one topped off at $29K but in the end, UMA is still cheaper (and a better school).
@NEPatsGirl yes still less however the other merits scholarships make it very close to same cost, making the choie a little harder. And he did get the Abigail Adams (MCAS) tuition waiver (additional $1714 this year). We will see, in the end he has to be happy with whatever school he chooses!
Absolutely. UMassAmherst was at the bottom of the "safety’ school list for D but its creeping up slowly but surely as the finaid packages come in. Only one school so far has come in affordable for us, while two have not and those two are very much academic safeties so they went into the trash bin. I’m curious how the “match” schools will come through with finaid.
Still waiting to here from UMass…Stockbridge School of Ag.
Me too – Are you in or out of state? I’m out of state, and getting very anxious.
S continues to wait as well. UMASS was a bit of an afterthought for him to apply to…but now a friend of his is going there so he is much more interested. I am 99% sure he will get in, but because it is out of state he really needs a scholarship to offset the difference in price.
It must be reassuring to those that are still waiting to hear that they are not alone!
Anyone else here when they log into spire get prompted with:

S’s says the same thing I believe. If you follow the links, it says under review. It was hard to find though & not immediately apparent.
Does anyone know if rejection letters are going out at the same time as acceptances or if they are last? I will be very surprised if S doesn’t get in here, but you never know.
I submitted my Umass app a couple hours before the due date. I live in Cali and got my acceptance packet on march 16th with an 8k scholarship. Congrats to everyone else!!!
From MA & still haven’t heard back.
My son sent an email to the woman in charge of Stockbridge (because he ran into her at an FFA conference) to say it was nice to see her again. She called him the next day (yesterday) and said that he got in but nothing in the mail yet and no packet. We are in Mass. I thought I’d share that since people who are accepted could be waiting for the mail, too (like us). Good luck everyone!
Still didn’t hear back, from MA. Does anyone know if they send rejection letters last or they send them along with acceptance letters?
