congrats! did you hear today or check today - they explained that they werent releasing any more decisions until next week so this is suprising
I heard today. They sent the email around 3:45 CST.
I was surprised too when it popped up.
congratulations! did you apply in-state or OOS? Also, what was the major that you applied for?
Hi, when did they say this? Assuming that means no decisions will be released this Thursday?
On the UMass Admissions Instagram account (which is a rather strange place to communicate important information) they state that the next wave of decisions will happen next week, the week of December 21st. They claim that releasing decisions in several batches is good because: 1) it allows those who are informed earliest to have more time to make a decision about what college to attend, and 2) because they expect lots of phone calls and emails with questions about acceptances and financial aid once students receive decisions and they don’t want their staff to be overwhelmed trying to respond.
So…all of that is understandable but the thing they are not saying is how they determined who would be in the first wave of students accepted last week vs second wave and so on. My guess (and I could very well be wrong) is that last week’s first wave of acceptances went to the students they really, really wanted most of all. Those with the highest GPAs and test scores or those they wanted for some other reason. The next batch of acceptances will be to students who are also well-qualified, but are second choices for whatever reason (lower grades and test scores or just not quite as compelling). Third wave will be their third choices. That’s just my guess.
We’re in Massachusetts. In our circles of local friends / classmates, the first batch of in-state notifications last week were Isenberg acceptances, with only a couple of exceptions. All submitted SAT scores. Also all applied EA - in late September / early November - weeks ahead of EA deadline. Again, this is just what we’ve heard about.
in my son’s (in state) school, the 1st round all went to super strong candidates
This is an interesting read:
It's Easier to Get into UMass Amherst for Non-Massachusetts Residents
Not sure about the first wave being the most talented. My in state daughter has good stats and is still waiting.
SAT 1540. 790/750
Top 10% in class
4 AP. 5’s and 4’s. Taking 5 senior year
4 sports including club
3 clubs with some leaderships
Part time job
I would agree. At my daughter’s in state, suburban Boston high school, the five or so who have been admitted are all at the very top of the class. I’m guessing that they will not even end up at UMass, but will attend Harvard, Dartmouth, etc.
Thank you!
I am sure your Daughter will get in. Her stats are so good.
I believe most CS decisions aren’t out yet as well.
I applied CS and haven’t heard anything yet.
So if some people found out yesterday, are they just going to do random decisions from now on?
Hey! This might not be true. A friend of mine submitted her application minutes before the deadline, and I’d submitted it a day before. My CGPA and SAT score were higher than hers, and in comparison I also have a lot more extracurricular involvement. However, she got her acceptance in the first wave of students last week. while I have still not heard from UMass. It might just be truly random. (Or not. I don’t understand why they can’t just release all decisions at the same time.)
I agree with this. I know kids that have gotten in already with much lower stats than this.
Thank you!
