I’ve had 2 in college for several years, was never eligible for need based FA. The next 4 years I’ll have 3 kids in college (my twins are the last), fingers crossed.
How do you do it?
Sallie Mae (we saved for college, but not the $600,000 needed for public schools for all 5). Fortunately my 2 oldest had good job offers before they graduated, the loans are now in their names only and should be paid in the next 5 years. They also worked while in college, and graduated early. Plus we don’t have nice things!
yup i had a 3.5 gpa unweighted, i had really good ec’s and a strong essay and was accepted. i also take full ib diploma classes just to give context. hope that helps
I just checked my daughter’s financial page, besides merit and the $5500 federal loan, she got nothing, 3 in college.
@Mjkacmom We received an email from Financial Aid 1/13 stating to check my S’s “Award Notification”. We checked the portal and didn’t see anything outlining an award. There was the $5,500 federal loan. But that was it.
So, a question for you all… A friend of mine has a freshman at UMass Amherst this year. She says that when her daughter was accepted to UMass last year she was not offered the honors college. However, a couple of months later she got notified that they were offering her the honors college. I was just wondering if anyone else heard of this happening at UMass. Not sure how often this occurs? Anyone know?
@SuntasticMom I’ve heard it’s relatively easy to transfer into the honors college if you stats and grade first semester support it.
My son was accepted for Mech Engineering yesterday! IS, 1300 SAT, 3.9 GPA, volunteering, internship. This one has move up to the top of his list!
My D instate got into School of Engineering and Honors College and also Deans Scholorship. Super excited!
Has anyone in-state received >$2000 merit? Seems to be the max for in-state
Does anyone know if a merit award for an OOS student may come after the acceptance letter?
I think it comes with the letter. You have to scroll all the way down.
-I got 16k/yr for OOS merit (Chancellor’s Scholarship?)
-Accepted In very early December (maybe the 9th?)
-Biochemistry major
-submitted 1510 SAT
-lots of volunteering, veterinary internship, 2 jobs
-2 Honors Societies
-flautist in orchestra, all state festivals
-2 varsity sports
Denied Honors College - a bit shocked at first but I’ve heard for biological sciences it can be harder to get into the honors college than some ivies…
My daughter has similar stats and didn’t get into honors (she got into honors at the other schools she applied to) and she’s studying actuarial sciences. They can apply again as freshmen, I believe.
That’s what I heard, and yes I got into other honors colleges too. I do wish it was based solely on merit qualifications and not what major you applied to!
Guys Umass Instagram said that they’ll release EA decisions throughout the end of January
