My guess is that many schools will defer (as long as they can) as they need more data. Will probably ask for 3rd quarter and even full year grades to factor in a decision.
How disappointing for your daughter (and brava for her wanting to go into nursing!). This is my first rodeo, but from all I’m reading, with the huge increase in EA applications, there are likely a lot more waitlisted kids. Also, kids seem to be applying to more schools. However, they can only pick 1 school, so I’m thinking that starting in April, waitlists will start getting offers.
I would say to have her keep her interest in UMass and maybe even reach out to Admissions or the Nursing program and let them know that UMass remains her first choice. Schools want a good yield. When they get to the waitlist, they will want to accept those who will say “yes”.
Good luck to her!
I am so sorry @Marsh8119. Your daughter certainly sounds very talented and it is always so hard to see our kids disappointed. I hope another program snatches her up and all works out ok. Again, I can not understand why nursing programs are so limited when we need nurses! All the best.
My daughter has applied to a number of different school in all parts of the country – so I’ve participated in a lot of online information sessions for various schools . . . and almost every school seems to state that “nursing is extremely competitive.”
Anyhow, daughter was accepted to UMass and we’re really looking forward to visiting (to the extent we can) and learning more about the school. Lots of admitted student events this week.
Oh, and she never received anything in the mail (accepted in December) - just online notification.
I think part of why they can’t expand the nursing programs too much is because there is limited space for students to do clinical in hospitals and nursing homes. They try to keep the groups small so that people have a chance to practice skills and get enough supervision. I think there is also a shortage of nursing professors as well. There was a great article that someone posted here- I just can’t remember where. I do think they need to find a way to expand some programs- just not sure how.
UMass nursing said they look for a freshman class of 64 and have a 10-12% acceptance rate- extremely competitive!
Generally programs are limited in size due to the limits of clinical placements for student nurses. The hospitals can only handle so many student nurses at any given time, and so the programs have to be mindful of those numbers so that their students can get the clinical practice. This happens at the undergraduate and graduate nursing levels.
Should have noted that my daughter did not apply to nursing – totally different major – but we still hear about the competitive nature of nursing even on general information sessions for schools.
Don’t fret, my daughter was also just waitlisted for UMass nursing but applied EA to a bunch of other direct admit schools and accepted until this point. The other schools are actually ranked higher so this was unexpected. Best of luck and stay calm and patient!
Those are high stats. I hope she ll clear the waitlist. What other acceptances does she have?
We still have not heard anything. Are we looking in the right place? My son says he has not received an email. I feel like we’re the only ones that haven’t heard.
UMass Boston, full scholarship, UNH, 12K merit per year, Fairfield, 26K per year and Clemson merit that we will find out in February. We will hear from Northeastern and Villanova by Feb 1st
Thank you so much!!! Good Luck to you as well!!
Where else did she apply? Maybe she’ll wind up where my daughter goes…
hi, she applied to Clemson, UNH, UConn, Villanova, BC, Northeastern, UPenn, Georgetown, Fairfield, and UMass Boston
All great schools…they overlap with UConn and Northeastern…fingers crossed for her!
thank you! good luck to you too!
Facebook probably has a group
Is this stat specifically for nursing? I saw that 42,000 applied and 27,000 are accepted throughout all of the university’s programs.
Don’t think nursing accepts 5000- they shoot for a class of 64.
Is anyone yet to receive a decision?
