UMass Amherst Prospective Class of 2022 Discussion

Hey! First time making a thread so hopefully I’m doing this right. I just wanted to make this thread for anybody who is deciding whether to go to UMass Amherst in the class of 2022 like me. This is for any questions people may have on housing, campus life, dorming, majors, honors college, etc. Maybe even make some friends and find dorming buddies before fall.

Hi! Happy New Year, and I hope everyone is enjoying their first day of 2018!
I’m wondering about employment opportunities at Umass Amherst because I personally am aware that I will have to pay my tuition myself, so I’m curious about job availability in-school and outside of school.
Also, what is the computer science program like at Umass Amherst in comparison to other schools around the region?

I am very interested in the job placement rate after graduation at isenberg

I was accepted to UMass Amherst, honors college with $14k chancellor’s award. I have other options at OSU (in state, not my first choice although it will most likely be the least expensive) and Fordham (don’t have the major I intend for, but I could find something probably) and I am still waiting for Northeastern, BU, NYU, and Northwestern. I think I have a pretty high chance of getting into northeastern and people keep asking me if I get in, would I choose UMass or northeastern and I’m having trouble deciding. I intend to major in Linguistics and UMass is #3 in the WORLD (!!!) but northeastern has a cool combined ASL/Linguistics major that I feel like I would be riveted with. Any advice? again I haven’t gotten into northeastern yet but I think my chances are pretty high.

Its the best in Massachusetts (not counting Harvard and MIT)

Look into UMass’s Linguistics major. Unless you get a lot of demonstrated aid from Northeastern, I wouldn’t do it personally, given the difference in price at that point would be about 40k~ If you plan on doing any sort of Graduate work, the cheaper option is generally the way to go.

I agree with ReqCollatz- if you’re going to graduate school it would be better to go to UMASS if it’s actually that good (don’t know much about that major), unless Northeastern gives you a lot of aid. Northeastern seems better for people looking for a job right after undergrad because of the co-ops.

Hi

Its in your acceptance letter

@axelgirl17 UMass Amherst is $47,609 for OOS tuition, fees, room and board, plus a $600 honors fee I think.
Minus you $14k scholarship would still leave $34k to pay.

OSU instate should be about $23k, right?

What are your stats and did you apply to Pitt?

3.9 UW, 4.6 W GPA

ACT 31

Rank: 29/302

I did not apply to Pitt.

I just got my financial aid award and it was not what I was hoping for lol but I guess it’s what I expected.

@benl54321 hiya! :slight_smile:

@axelgirl17 Hi, so my son got into CS (honors college), he also applied to few of the schools you applied too, could you please share your stats…good luck hope you get into Northwestern.

Hi, axelgirl. My daughter is at UMass Amherst, honors college, majoring in Linguistics (she has known for years that this was what she was interested in). She is really, really happy there. Loves the Linguistics department. Loves the quiet, sizable, brand new honors college campus within the campus. It’s right by the gym, too, and the food there is incredibly good. We knew she was only going to qualify for merit aid (she got the 14K merit at UMass Amherst), so we didn’t have her apply to the private schools - they were going to cost us double or more what UMass Amherst would. And yes, UMass Amherst IS ranked 3rd in the USA, at least, for undergrad Linguistics. It has a decent sized Linguistics department - about 30 majors per year - which means you’d have a sizable number of undergraduate colleagues, not a common thing in Linguistics. There is the opportunity to take classes at Smith, Holyoke, Amherst, and Hampshire, too. And UMass Amherst gave her credit for every AP in which she got a 4 or above, and for the three college classes she took as a senior. That meant that she entered with credit for about 3 semesters. She will likely have enough credits to graduate in two years, although I’m sure she will stay for three or four. I feel as if the school is a very good value for her.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I haven’t met many other linguistics majors so this is a huge help in figuring out what the best option is for me. I did get to visit in December (before I was accepted) and I visited one of my friend’s who’s in the honors college. Thanks again and I will definitely think about this when I make my decision.

@MomNama my stats are in post #10, but I’d be happy to provide information beyond those numbers if you would like. Good luck to your son as well!

@axelgirl17…Thanks honey, my son got accepted in honors college for CS. We are so happy, he also got into Penn we are waiting for the financial aid from there.

@MomNama wow congrats! i was deferred from northeastern so waiting until RD to see if I even need to compare anyway…

Wow…my son was deferred last week by northeastern…OMG…I have a good feeling that Northeastern…you both have good chance…they are seriously considering you guys. Hang in there.
