My daughter is intersted in a Communication major. We live in NJ.
The schools she i's interested in:

UCONN - Storrs (a reach)
UMASS Amherst
Rutgers New Brunswick (in state)
Rochester Institute of Technology
Ramapo State (safety)

Her stats:
Honors Public high school - Only offer honors and AP classes
SAT: Math 520, English 530
GPA - 86/100, the school translates this to 3.2/4.0
Class Rank: School does not provide since elite school
Her teachers will give good rec's.
Not too much EC - they load the work on at this school!

SHe tooks the SAT once and didn't do as well as expected. This is the same as the score that she got on PSAT's, so we are not too optimistic about a significant increase. She is taking them again Oct and Nov, and also will take ACT also.

Thanks!!!

Yes, UConn is a reach, Umass a slight reach, but she's got a good chance at Rutgers in-state (match to slight reach), Rochester Institute of Technology (match), and Ramapo State is a safety--like you said.

Also, if she didn't mind going to the midwest, there are a lot of good communication schools she could get into there--especially if she could increase her SAT CR+W score by around 100 points total.

Good luck to her.

I agree with Calcruzer. We are from NJ and my S did not get into UConn. He did have higher SATs and gpa. Actually, he was WL'd for UConn.

Your D might also want to check out Ithaca College. They seem to have pretty good school of communications. My son applied there last year, and I thought their aid package was pretty good. He did decide to go elsewhere, but Ithaca became his second choice school. He just decided upon a larger school when decision time rolled around.

She should be good for UMass Amherst, with their ~82%ish? acceptance rate, UConn I'm not so sure but apply EARLY ACTION (UMass has this option also), which will boost her chances tremendously... and if she can boost her SAT scores to 600s, it'll help a lot ;)

What schools are you applying to? My D and her friends feel that Rutgers is kind of a dull place to go to college.

My daughter got a 25 Composite score on the Oct. 28th ACT test, so now she has more options. She plans to specify Journalism on the applications.

Do you agree with the following?

Revised Schools:
Ohio University Scripps (slight reach)
UCONN - Storrs (slight reach)
UMASS Amherst - (Match)
Rutgers New Brunswick (Match)
University at Buffalo - SUNY (slight reach)
Ramapo State (Safety)

Are there any other State Universities in the NE w/ Journalism major that should be on her list?

Her stats:
Honors Public high school - All classes are honors or AP.
SAT: 1050 (Math 520, English 530)
ACT: 25
GPA - 86/100, the school translates this to 3.2/4.0
Class Rank: School does not provide since elite school
Her teachers will give good rec's.
