Umass Amherst vs Temple???

Hello, I have an inquiry and it would be very appreciated if you were to provide insightful tips and advice.

Major: I want to go into finance , my main major is Accounting. I got Accounting for Temple, but an undeclared major within the social and behavioral science for Umass Amherst, which is not really related to finance… and it is not even my second preferred major… I don’t know why they put me in…

Money: Both Schools offer pretty much the same amount of scholarship…

Distance: I live in New Hampshire. 2 hours drive to Umass Amherst, 5 hours drive to Temple. My mom prefer Umass Amherst since it is closer to home…

Ranking: From an overall college perspective, Umass overall ranks higher than Temple…

Please give me some recommendations!! Thanks!!!

I’ve never been to Temple, but UMass Amherst has got to be the nastiest campus I’ve been to. My son and I went there last summer, and the facilities were dirty (black soot all up the buildings, dirty bathrooms, dirty floors, trash on the ground, a general lack of trash receptacles) and unmaintained (minimal grass, no landscaping, potholes on sidewalks and even wheelchair ramps, old stained furniture, dated classrooms in need of cleaning and repair). We really wanted to like the school, as the academics would have been a good fit, but neither of us could imagine staying for four years in such an ugly location. Now, I will say that the rest of the town is great… and there is the benefit of being able to meet students and attend classes at the other Amherst schools.

You may want to contact UMass now and see if they can switch your acceptance and move you into the business school. If they can’t I’d pick Temple since you have a direct admit to the business school. Otherwise you could be in a position where you can’t major in accounting.

is this mostly because of the party scenes?

Go to Temple. It is VERY difficult to get into Isenberg at UMass if you didn’t get in when you originally were accepted; they require a 3.7 GPA and many kids transfer out because of that reason.

The post re: the “nastiness” of the umass campus is ridiculous. The campus is situated in a beautiful area, with substantial landscaping, a bucolic pond in the center of the campus, and a wide variety of mature trees.

I’m a fan of the town of Amherst but know little about the U.

We visited Temple twice, before and after acceptance, and were really impressed with the facilities there. Things like the four year grad guarantee and the direct admit to your major (is accounting what you really want? That’s not finance either) would sway me to Temple.

Are the costs similar, if cost is a factor?
