UMass Honors

Mt OOS D24 is VERY interested in UMass Honors, but would only matriculate if invited to Honors. The unpredictability of not have an application to Honors confuses me. How do you signal interest in Honors? She is applying EA as a Classics/Anthropology double major and has strong stats (4.0 UW/top 10%, 34 ACT). Any tips appreciated!

I don’t know if a way to signal interest, unless she mentions it in her “why UMass Amherst” essay. UMass Amherst is notorious for what often seems capricious admittance to the HC. From what I’ve heard people say, they want to balance geographic, gender, and major diversity, as well as giving the opportunity to the top students. I think, as a Classics/anthropology major from out of state with good stats, your child has a better than average chance of admission to the HC. But, it is definitely a limited capacity, and I’ve seen people in the past not be offered the HC that baffles me.

My daughter did not get into honors (none of my daughters got in), 3.95/34 act, although she did get the top merit outside of honors. She was 8th in her class of 300. We’re from NJ, so not too far, I’m guessing UMASS has enough NJ students.

Thank you for your insight! I guess she will just apply and hope for the best.
