UMCP/GWU trip logistics

katytibbs, I love when people come up with new options. Option 4 is worth considering. Option 5 would be hiring a car with driver. That sounds best. Especially if it’s a long black limo with american flags and a police escort clearing traffic for you :)

We’ll see if the dropping off baggage at UMCP admissions is a possibility. Then I’ll let the spouse and D1 decide what they want to do.

D1 is currently interested in environmental studies from a political/policy standpoint. American was on her list for quite awhile, but she wants to keep open the option to turn down a more science-like path. Rightly or wrongly, she doesn’t feel that American would offer that opportunity. I agree that touring American, at the very least, seems sensible.

Caution with the dropping bags at hotel and dropping car off … We left the GWU area and it was a major schlep to the train station where we picked up our car for the remainder our trip (heading to Phila). Just be aware of where your drop off or pickup points are relative to your hotel.

When we went to hear the AU presentation, I recall the rep saying that AU is very open to students designing their own program. Also, AU is very big on internships in DC. Since AU has a major in Environmental Studies, I suggest that your D find out if AU can design a program of studies in Environmental Studies with a focus on policy. She can find out if AU has relevant internships in DC. AU also gives merit scholarships to the top applicants. It has a very nice campus. The presentation is around an hour. I think if you can get over to the presentation and talk to the rep after the presentation to see if AU can design a program for your D, she will re-consider AU. GW is a very urban campus. I hated the freshman dorm shown on the tour at GW-was surprised that GW would show such a lousy room. I would only consider GW if they have exactly the program your D would want. I suggest that your D call or e-mail UMCP, GW, and AU to see if they have exactly what she wants to study with relevant internships so there are no surprises should she decide to come here.

But be careful with MARC’s schedule - the trains don’t run all day/every day. Just morning and afternoon rush hours Mondays - Fridays. (It’s a commuter train Maryland Area Regional Commuter.)
